Iran says it has killed mastermind of twin attacks

Iran says it has killed mastermind of twin attacks”

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombings and gun attacks on the parliament and the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic's founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, on Wednesday.

The intelligence ministry said Friday 41 suspects were arrested in Tehran, in the northwestern provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan, and in West Azerbaijan, near the borders with Iraq and Turkey.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has claimed Washington is lying about fighting terrorism in the Middle East, saying USA activity has instead given rise to Islamic State.

A senior official, who also asked not to be named, said the attacks would push Iran toward "a harsher regional policy".

The move comes a day after a pair of ISIS-claimed attacks on Iran's parliament and the tomb of its revolutionary leader killed at least 13 people and wounded over 40.

A local official at the port town of Jask, also in Hormuzgan, said five suspects linked to Islamic State were detained on Monday, Iran's Mizan news agency reported.

Parliament speaker Ali Larijani also attacked the United States and Saudi Arabia, which he called "a tribal state very far from anything like a democracy".

On Tehran's enmity with Washington, the Iranian leader said "Some of the problems with the United States are essentially unresolvable as the US's problem with us has nothing to do with nuclear energy or human rights, their problem is with the principle of the Islamic Republic".

Tehran police said the auto the attackers used for both attacks was discovered on Saturday in the city center.

ISIS has long vowed to attack Iran because the country had deployed military advisers and support to both Syria and Iraq in their fights against the extremist group.

Two separate attacks shook Tehran on June 7.

Earlier, authorities reported the arrest of eight suspects in the country's Alborz province, all of whom with ties to the recent attacks.

Meanwhile, Tehran police said the auto used by the terrorists for the twin attacks was discovered on Saturday in central Tehran.

The Majlis assault involving three gunmen lasted about five hours and left dozens of casualties, while the mausoleum attack took minutes and left several people dead and injured.
