Phillies select OF Adam Haseley with 8th overall pick in MLB Draft

The Phillies had two University of Virginia players at the top of their draft list and the D'backs took first baseman Pavin Smith with the seventh overall pick, leaving outfielder Adam Haseley for the Phillies with the eighth overall pick.

"I was not really surprised", Fanning said. Smith is a solid contact hitter with power to all fields. "He is a player with above-average intangibles for the game". He's got outstanding makeup, what we consider makeup, his character, his intelligence, his field awareness.

Smith, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior, was a First-Team All-ACC selection.

"Very similiar", Almaraz said of the two top-10 players he's pushed in successive drafts. But his body size and line-drive stroke, and his speed, had Almaraz going a similar route.

"This guy's poise, his ability to handle big situations, to handle one at-bat to the next, is really advanced", O'Connor said. "I just feel extremely grateful and blessed and I know the Phillies are an unbelievable organization".

"I'm just super excited to get started and go through the process", he said.

Haseley has the makings of a potential five-tool player at the Major League Baseball level because of his hitting ability combined with good speed and impressive defensive skills in the field.

A two-time All-American, Haseley batted an ACC-best.390 this season with 14 home runs and 56 RBI in earning first-team All-America honors from Baseball America as well as first-team All-ACC laurels.

But Almaraz projected him "to hit anywhere between 20 and 25" homers here.

"We don't have any plans at this point in time to make a transition to him to another position", he said.

The Phillies felt that the strength of this first round was in college players.

The Arizona Diamondbacks might have made the Phillies first round pick a little easier.

"Command of the strike zone", Almaraz said. "Everyone in our organization saw him".

I have a versatility and I think they recognized that. "From there, it just took off".

Pavin Smith is heading to Arizona. "I'm going to look back on this day and such a happy memory". I told everybody at my house to quiet down to see if Adam gets picked here.

"It was an unbelievable feeling". "It's an awesome feeling".

Where that leaves Smith, selected at number seven out of the University of Virginia in Monday's draft, remains somewhat cloudy. I've scouted him extensively.

The real reason Haseley's future isn't on the mound is because of his promise at the plate. "But we are a fairly small high school in a fairly rural area in California, so we don't think of our guys in terms of "Day 1 MLB Draft talent". He has a four-pitch arsenal, and thrived both out of the bullpen and the starting rotation in his two seasons playing for the Mustangs. He's advanced that way.
