SNP MPs step forward to replace ousted Angus Robertson as Westminster leader”

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon promised to "reflect" on the outcome of the General Election, which saw the Tories reverse decades of failure in Scotland to win just over a dozen seats and Scottish Labour benefit from the socialist leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.

May had called for the snap election confident to gain additional seats in parliament for the ruling Conservative party to strengthen her position in the upcoming Brexit talks.

Mr Jones wrote to Mrs May calling for the JMC to meet to establish a "broad-based consensus" on Brexit while Mr Cameron has said the Prime Minister will have to change her approach following the election.

"The strongest possible position in the Brexit negotiations will be one that is backed by all parties and all governments across the UK".

But when asked if the Scottish Cabinet had considered the impact of the election on its own referendum plans, he said: "There was no discussion, no".

The SNP also did not respond to a question from BuzzFeed News on whether, now the general election is over, the fund will be reactivated to allow supporters of a second referendum to donate money to the efforts.

In the letter, Sturgeon said: "The negotiating team must include representation from the devolved government".

In a joint statement, the 13 Scottish Tory MPs elected last week said the result in Scotland had been a "damning verdict" on Ms Sturgeon's proposals and she now had to "face up to reality".

Ms Sturgeon's Brexit intervention comes as the SNP is accused of being in denial about the backlash against Scottish independence.

And she said SNP MPs who last night lost their seats have paid the price "for what was a massive political miscalculation on Nicola Sturgeon's part".

"Our demand for (for a second independence referendum) was way ahead of its time and should only have been pursued once it was clear a majority of Scots actually want independence". It was a damning verdict.

"They should not be taking sides with any one of the protagonists in Northern Ireland because it's so delicate, it's so vulnerable and it could therefore unsettle the process in Northern Ireland and that could then subsequently unsettle the arrangement for the whole of the United Kingdom". "She should now get back to the day job of running our schools and hospitals".

Writing in The Sunday Times, Mr Neil, the MSP for Airdrie and Shotts, said that the party needed "to take the people with us on the journey towards independence".

"She needs to look the Scottish people in the eye and tell them she has given up on a second independence referendum".
