Capitol Police Officers Hailed as Heroes After Baseball Practice Shooting

Capitol Police Officers Hailed as Heroes After Baseball Practice Shooting”

"He was shot", said Brooks, adding he helped apply a tourniquet with his belt to a congressional staffer who was shot in the leg.

U.S. Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, was shot by a rifle-wielding gunman Wednesday at a GOP congressional baseball team practice just outside of Washington. Flake, of Arizona, said he ran onto the field and also tried to come to Scalise's aide.

The Post is reporting that "law-enforcement officials" have identified the man as James T. Hodgkinson, of Belleville, Illinois. He had been living out of his van in the Alexandria area in recent months, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

The two Capitol Police officers who were injured have been identified as David Bailey and Krystal Griner, according to House Speaker Paul Ryan.

The President and first lady remained inside the hospital for about twenty minutes before returning to the White House. "This is a game where Republicans and Democrats come together and put fellowship and bipartisanship ahead of party politics", said Democratic Sen. "Their sacrifice makes democracy possible". Lawmakers say the event is a welcome break from the bitter partisanship that can engulf most aspects of congressional life. Shortly later an officer called to alert that "there was also a victim down in the baseball field". Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent, said in a statement that he was "sickened" to learn that Hodgkinson had apparently volunteered for his presidential campaign. And I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms. Scalise is the No. 3 House Republican leader.

Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, said his staffer Barth was among the wounded and was in stable condition.

Republican members of Congress made their way back Wednesday morning to the Capitol still in the baseball clothes they'd been wearing when gunfire broke out at their practice field in a Virginia suburb.

At the time of the shooting, the lawmakers were preparing for an annual congressional game scheduled for Thursday night.

Hodgkinson has been in the area since March, living out of his van, said Washington FBI Special Agent In Charge Tim Slater. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society.

In a March 22 Facebook post, Hodgkinson described Trump as a "traitor".

The team was taking batting practice when gunshots rang out and chaos erupted.

Lawmaker Jeff Duncan said he was leaving the practice when he was approached by a man he later learned was the shooter, who asked if the team was Republican or Democrat before heading toward the field.

The gunman had a rifle and "a lot of ammo", said Sen. The attacker was shot and later died. Someone else yelled "take cover". Barton said his son, Jack, got under an SUV.

The attack proved how vital - and encompassing - the Capitol Police can be. "With this latest attack, I think we're going to redouble our efforts to look at security".

So it hardly seemed unusual when a man approached Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC in the baseball field parking lot. On most days, members wouldn't go to the floor unless they were speaking, but on Wednesday the chamber was full.

Duncan said he replied it was the Republican team, and the man thanked him and turned around. He was in critical condition but the wound was not life-threatening, officials said.

Lawmakers were stunned in the aftermath of the event, which raised questions about the security of members of Congress.
