Congressmen Reportedly Shot At Early Morning Baseball Practice

Congressmen Reportedly Shot At Early Morning Baseball Practice”

"Five people were transported medically from the scene", Alexandria police chief Michael Brown told a press conference. His wounds were not believed to be life-threatening.

A spokeswoman for George Washington Hospital said two patients were brought to the facility and listed in critical condition, but declined further comment.

An aide of Rep. Roger Williams of Texas was also shot in the carnage. Local police officers and Captiol Police arrived within ten minutes of the shooting and wounded Hodgkinson, taking him into custody. "He ran with a wound to the dugout", Flake said. The House cancelled proceedings for the day.

"This morning several innocent people, including some of my Congressional colleagues, were attacked as they practiced for the Congressional baseball game". Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., said his team was practicing when they heard about the attack on the Republicans.

Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Mich., said Scalise was standing on second base when he was shot.

"Still I'm hearing no return fire", Brooks said.

In addition to Rep. Scalise, NBC can confirm 2 Capitol police officers were also shot. They were both shot and wounded, yet continued to take on the assailant.

"One of our security detail was shooting back, but it was our pistol versus the shooter's rifle", Brooks said.

Barton described the shooter as a "middle aged man". I think we need to be out and not behind a wall.

The FBI is leading the investigation into the shooting. Barton said his son, Jack, got under an SUV.

"I am sickened by this despicable act", Sanders said.

In a dramatic blow-by-blow account, representative Mo Brooks of Alabama told CNN the gunman was armed with a rifle and appeared to be a white male.

"We heard a very loud shot" during batting practice", Flake said.

He said he grabbed Mr Scalise's phone to call his wife.

She said the shooting "went on for quite a while".

Initial reports said that as many as 50 shots had been fired, but Flake said, "50 would be an understatement".

A congressional aide said Mr Scalise, who rallies Republican votes in the House of Representatives, was hit during the training session in Alexandria attended by up to 25 politicians, plus their staff, ahead of an annual game. She said the officer was then evacuated by helicopter. "At this point, I do not know the extent of the injuries to all those who were shot". She said he was using a long gun and exchanging fire with law enforcement officers, one of whom yelled for her to get down.

The witness, @ben_childers, said it happened at a congressional baseball team practice session.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected", he said.

Lawmakers were stunned in the aftermath of the event, which raised questions about the security of members of Congress.

The staunch conservative is among the lawmakers leaving the drive to repeal former president Barack Obama's signature health care law, among other top Republican priorities. The last time a lawmaker was wounded was when Democratic Rep. Gabby Giffords of Arizona was hit in the head and grievously injured while meeting with constituents at a supermarket parking lot in 2011.
