Cop at frat brothers' hearing: Pledge 'looked like a corpse'

Cop at frat brothers' hearing: Pledge 'looked like a corpse'”

He's representing the parents of the 19-year-old Piazza, who died after a fall February 2 at the house during a night of drinking.

Monday's hearing in a packed courtroom will determine whether there is enough evidence to go to trial, according to USA Today.

Ryan Foster, Edward Gilmartin III, Craig Heimer, Lars Kenyon, Nicholas Kubera, Ryan McCann, Jonah Neuman, Lucas Rockwell, Joseph Sala, Michael Schiavone, Luke Visser, Parker Yochim, Brendan Young and the Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Theta face charges ranging from involuntary manslaughter to tampering with evidence, following a lengthy investigation into Piazza's death and recommendations by a Centre County grand jury.

The father of the New Jersey teen who died after a hazing at a Penn State fraternity said he was highly offended to see defendants and their families act like they were at a fraternity get-together following Monday's preliminary hearing.

"He looked dead, he looked like a corpse", State College Police Detective David Scicchitano said before the footage was shown.

Fraternity brothers and pledges hovered around Piazza, strapping on a bag filled with books to keep him from turning over and choking on his own vomit and bringing in a bucket to clean up when he did vomit.

Shortly before 4 a.m., after a fraternity member saw Piazza on the floor and put a blanket over him, Piazza was alone on the floor of the fraternity house.

The 19 year old staggered through the house, visibly in pain he fell head first several times.

The tape shows Piazza writhing in apparent agony.

Piazza consumed what prosecutors said was a life-threatening amount of alcohol during a hazing ritual at the house in State College.

Timothy Piazza's parents left before playback of the surveillance video.

Sixteen fraternity brothers and their lawyers overflowed into the gallery of the courtroom.

The 19-year-old suffered an abdominal bruise and was clearly hurt after he first fell at 11:22 p.m., Scicchitano said Monday.

"He is unconscious, his eyes are closed, [and] he is limp", Scicchitano testified. When fraternity members found him, unconscious, cold to the touch, and with blood on his face the next morning, it was more than 40 minutes before they called 911.

Fraternity members tried to dress Piazza but couldn't because his body was too rigid, the detective said.

"Of course, this comes right after all of them watching video for five hours of what real cruel and inhumane punishment was when the fraternity brothers essentially murdered our son, tortured him, held him captive and left him for dead over a 12-hour period of time", James said.

Penn State banned the fraternity after concluding it had engaged in "a persistent pattern" of excess drinking, drug use and hazing.

A preliminary hearing involving the Beta Theta Pi fraternity members charged in relation to the death of pledge Timothy Piazza was continued Monday after nearly 11 hours of testimony. Eight faced felony charges that could carry up to 20 years in prison. Those range from involuntary manslaughter to aggravated assault.

District Attorney Parks Miller told NBC News that the charges came down to personal responsibility.
