Nebraska resumes beef shipments to China after hiatus”

Cows imported from Mexico or Canada must be traceable to the first USA farm or port they entered via.

While modest in size, it's massive in scope.

Washington, DC -The North American Meat Institute praised the administration today following the announcement of the details of the agreement with the Chinese government to resume imports of USA beef.

The deal is part of a trade agreement between the two countries.

Ricketts praised Greater Omaha Packing's initiative in being first and said the shipment is the culmination of years of wooing Chinese distributors and government officials.

USCA President Kenny Graner commented on the news, "We were briefed by the Administration during our fly-in on the status of the agreement and it comes as welcome news to all producers that we have once again secured this important market". "Now, our producers can compete on a level playing field, so on my next trip to Beijing, I'm looking forward to seeing Montana beef on my plate". Of course US beef is going to be positioned in that market at the very top of the market - the highest quality product available.

There's reason to be skeptical about how quickly Nebraska will win market share and benefit from the trade deal.

The United States was the top supplier of imported beef to China until it was banned from the Chinese market in 2003, the release added.

A set date for shipment hasn't been announced yet, but Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue said he has no doubt that as soon as the Chinese get a taste of American beef, they will want more of it. "Sino-U.S. trade will likely boom this year, with China's imports from the U.S. growing faster than its exports".

"We're probably in about second gear right now", Ibach said, "and we'll go from third to fourth really fast". Of course, given how dry it's been this spring so far, we know we are not out of the woods.

The beef industry hopes that "by getting our foot in the door we can develop a long lasting and mutually beneficial relationship with China", Craig Uden, president of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Greater Omaha Packing, which exports to 68 countries, considers the risk to be low and well worth the reward, Davis said.
