"'Oslo" takes Tony Award for best new play

Platt thanked his cast mates, crew and family, calling his parents his heroes.

The surprise hit musical won a total of six Tonys, including best musical actor for 23-year-old newcomer Ben Platt in the title role. He had this inspiring message to young people out there: "The things that make you unusual are the things that make you powerful". As well as taking the award of best musical, the show won five other Tony awards. The American television network CBS broadcast the awards show across the country.

"Evan Hansen's" success comes amid what many regard as a particularly rich musical season on Broadway. Our spy says there's a simple reason that someone who didn't RSVP his pals would show up for the party anyway: "He didn't know he was going to win".

While four Tony Awards is an wonderful accomplishment, Dear Evan Hansen took the lead, winning six Tonys, out of its nine nominations.

So did actress Rachel Bay Jones, who plays Evan Hansen's mother.

A "Nana" is a common nickname for a grandmother.

The show came into the night as the second-leading Tony nominee but ended up on top, with a revival of "Hello, Dolly!" starring Bette Midler next with four Tonys.

"Oslo" won the best play award. Its star, Bette Midler, 71, won the Tony for best actress in a musical.

The veteran actress, who was treated to a standing ovation by the excited crowd, continued to share her appreciation and love for the award backstage. The music signals to a speaker that their time is up.

"We discussed Dolly's history and the spine of her story".

"This thing (musical) has the ability to lift your spirits in these awful, bad times", Midler said.

Another new USA production, "Oslo", that was inspired by the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and Norwegian husband and wife diplomats behind the 1993 Oslo Accords won best play.

"Come From Away" is set in Gander, N.L., in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. The small town became the temporary home for almost 7,000 people after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. She won three Emmy Awards for her role as Jackie Harris on "Roseanne" and thanked her children.
