PSU frat brothers go before judge today”

The Penn State University pledge who died after a booze-fueled hazing ritual "looked like a corpse" on frat-house video footage, a detective testified Monday.

Today's preliminary hearing will determine whether the 18 brothers, as well as their fraternity, should stand trial.

Members of a Penn State fraternity facing charges related to the death earlier this year of a pledge after a night of heavy drinking are due in court Monday for a hearing about whether there's enough evidence to head to trial.

Penn state is trying to prevent a repeat of February's tragedy.

"He looked dead. He looked like a corpse", Scicchitano said. In court, Scicchitano said this amount alone is considered a fatal level.

"He is unconscious, his eyes are closed, he is limp".

"They put him on a couch, put a blanket over him and stood around and talked for a while", Scicchitano said.

The video surveillance footage was played in the courtroom documenting the time of Piazza's initial fall and the several hours in between that fall and the fraternity calling 9-11. Testimony included his firsthand observations of Piazza, who Scicchitano said he saw briefly before Piazza was flown from Mount Nittany Medical Center to Hershey Medical Center.

"To know that he was lying at the bottom of the basement steps for any length of time at all by himself", his mother said.

Ryan McCann, charged with one count of tampering with evidence, was the former member who made the 9-11 call almost 12 hours after Piazza's first fall, and failed to mention the fall at all, only disclosing that alcohol was involved after being prompted by the operator. When fraternity members found him, unconscious, cold to the touch, and with blood on his face the next morning, it was more than 40 minutes before they called 911.

Though Piazza's death was ruled accidental, 18 brothers were charged in connection.

Eight face the most serious charge of aggravated assault, a felony that carries a sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison.

One of the incidents captured on video shows defendant Jonah Neuman, 19, of Nashville, Tennessee, angrily shoving another fraternity member who protested that Piazza might have a concussion.

"This wasn't boys being boys", Jim Piazza, the boy's father, initially told CBS News. "This was the murder of our son". What was originally over 12 hours along, the video was cut down to highlight the points of the video determined to be relevant to the case - still about three hours in length. They let him suffer for 12 hours. "This death of this young man, which was something that never should have happened, serves as a wake-up call to American universities". The pledge died two days later from a traumatic brain injury. He soon gets up and heads to the front door but again falls headfirst into the door area. Shortly before midnight, a fraternity brother wrote on a group message that Piazza "might actually be a problem". Kline said they could not watch the surveillance video, saying it was "just too painful and too difficult" for them to see. "And as a result, they are the cause of Tim coming nearly to a.4 (blood-alcohol content) level of alcohol".
