Rifle-wielding attacker wounds GOP leader, killed by police

He later died, President Donald Trump said in remarks to the nation.

Hodgkinson was shot and killed by law enforcement at the scene of the incident.

Police say the suspect is believed to be in custody. They included the gunman, according to the Washington Post. They stand ready to protect everyone - from Members and staff to constituents and tourists - who visit the Capitol complex each day.

He also said that lawmakers and others were lucky that Capitol Police were at the scene.

"Congressman Scalise is a friend, a very good friend", Trump said.

FBI Agent Tim Slater would not characterize the attack, saying "We are exploring all angles". Once they were able, Flake said he and Rep. Brad Wenstrup, who is a physician, went out to where Scalise was lying to apply pressure to the wound.

He would also not confirm a report by CBS that the gunman was welding a high-powered semi-automatic assault rifle. The members were practicing for Thursday's annual Congressional Baseball Game fundraiser held at Nationals Stadium in Washington.

In a dramatic blow-by-blow account, representative Mo Brooks of Alabama told CNN the gunman was armed with a rifle and appeared to be a white male.

"Scalise was playing second base, his position, and all of a sudden we heard a loud - what sounded like a gunshot, very loud and very close. The next thing I remember was somebody on the field yelling 'Run, he's got a gun'". Mika's family said the lobbyist was shot multiple times and was in critical condition following surgery.

Authorities said Wednesday afternoon that it was too early to determine if the attack was a targeted shooting or an assassination attempt. And having no self-defense, the field was basically a killing field.

"Do we know where he's at?" the man filming shouts to those near him. The game has raised millions for local charities over the years, and is generally seen as the rare social event where elected officials on either side of the increasingly yawning political divide can come together with something vaguely resembling unity. The House has canceled votes for the remainder of the Wednesday session, but Thursday's Congressional Baseball Game is expected to go forward. A government official says Hodgkinson is the suspect in the Virginia shooting that injured Rep. Steve Scalise and several others.

"Prior to entering surgery, the Whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone", Scalise's office said in a statement.

Lawmaker Brooks described Scalise dragging his body across the pitch to get away from the shooter while the firing continued.

Texas Rep. Joe Barton, still in his baseball uniform, told reporters that Scalise's security detail, Capitol Hill police and then Alexandria police returned fire in a battle that lasted as long as 10 minutes and included dozens of shots.

Republican Rep. Martha McSally said Republican and Democratic House members joined hands and prayed after learning of the shooting.
