Virginia gubernatorial primary: Ralph Northam defeats Tom Perriello to win Democratic nomination

Virginia gubernatorial primary: Ralph Northam defeats Tom Perriello to win Democratic nomination”

The primary election in each party seems to echo the insurgent versus establishment narrative so powerful in 2016.

Northam said he'd do everything he could to reach out to Perriello backers.

The gubernatorial race in Virginia, the only state other than New Jersey electing a new governor this year, is seen as an key test of President Donald Trump's popularity ahead of the 2018 mid-term elections for the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

"If I am entrusted with governorship of the Commonwealth we love, I will be an ethical, honest, hard-working, principled Governor", Gillespie continued. "I trust his dedication to all Virginians", Lee said of Northam. "He cares for everyone".

Perriello made a surprise entrance into the race in January and faced an uphill climb from the beginning. He energized many new-to-politics voters who oppose Trump but was ultimately unable to expand the universe of Democratic primary voters enough to counter Northam's advantages.

"Corey did prove he's a more formidable candidate than anyone gave him credit for, but that means nothing if he doesn't use it to help Ed win", Nohe said.

Northam had the support of the state Democratic Party's core constituencies, including teachers groups and African-American political and religious leaders. He was the epitome of party establishment - a former Republican National Committee chairman - in a state where that still matters. State Senator Frank Wagner of Virginia finished a distant third. But Stewart repeatedly blasted the former Washington lobbyist as a product of the "swamp" Trump had pledged to drain. Looking at county-level maps of the two races, Perriello's campaign manager, Brennan Gilmore, noted that his candidate-whose old congressional district included a rural area around Charlottesville-won numerous same interior counties as Stewart.

"We really don't know how it's going to turn out", Stewart said.

In the gubernatorial race, Former 5th District Representative Tom Perriello is taking on Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam for the Democratic nomination. The Northam-Perriello race drew the most press interest because it was seen as a proxy for ideological battles in the Democratic party. Meanwhile, Northam had all of the state's elected officials in his corner.

In a statement issued after the primary was called, Platt congratulated Fairfax on his win, thanking her supporters and fellow candidates and urging Democrats to unite before the general election in November.

Justin Fairfax won the Democratic Party lieutenant governor nomination, with 49.1 percent of the vote. Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam is banking on a cerebral appeal, saying he'll also stand up to Trump but will work with state Republicans to move a progressive agenda forward. Democrats in the region drove the higher turnout - choosing among crowded fields in seven contested House of Delegates primaries in addition to competitive races for lieutenant governor and governor.

Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam and former Republican National Committee chair Ed Gillespie will face off for Virginia governor in November. A county board member in Prince William County, near Washington, D.C., Stewart has been a supporter of aggressively deporting undocumented immigrants.

She managed to win the Democratic nomination to challenge Del. Statewide, Northam has 57.4 percent of the vote to Perriello's 42.6 percent.

Stewart has run a controversial campaign, pledging to fight the removal of Virginia's Confederate memorials and to crackdown on illegal immigration, and pledging his loyalty to Trump and his policies.
