AG Sessions: Accusations of Collusion 'False,' 'Appalling and Detestable'”

Trump was responding to a Washington Post report that special counsel Robert Mueller, who is overseeing the Department of Justice Russia investigation, is looking into whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

The newspaper also says senior intelligence officials have agreed to be interviewed by investigators working for the special counsel.

Mr Trump's legal team quickly denounced the report on Wednesday.

Trump wrote in a follow-up tweet that he was the victim of a "witch hunt" and called the people behind the investigations "very bad and conflicted". That shift began shortly after May 9, when Trump fired then-FBI Director James B. Comey. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the person who would be responsible for carrying out any such dismissal, told a different congressional panel on Tuesday he would not fire Mueller without good cause and he had seen no such cause.

"I have never been directed to do anything I believe to be illegal, immoral, unethical or inappropriate", Rogers said.

Trump claimed - and Comey later affirmed - that Comey assured him he was not personally under FBI investigation.

Tuesday the Federal Bureau of Investigation took possession of notes and memos that Mr. Comey wrote about his private meetings with Mr. Trump and then passed to a law professor in NY to leak to the media. That's particularly the case since other high-ranking administration officials have declined under oath in open testimony to provide more details about whether Trump asked them in any way to influence Comey or the investigation. And now, former FBI Director Jim Comey is hinting there may be even more to the story with Sessions.

The findings come after Comey's testimony about his personal interactions with the president.

The White House on Wednesday evening declined to comment about the Post's obstruction-of-justice report.

A day or two after the March 22 meeting, Trump telephoned Coats and Rogers to separately ask them to issue public statements denying the existence of any evidence of coordination between his campaign and the Russian government.

Comey also said Trump repeatedly sought assurances that he wasn't a target of the Russian Federation investigation.

But Mr Comey also testified that to his knowledge the president had not tried to stop the Russian Federation investigation.

Mr Comey said he was "sure" Mr Mueller was looking at whether Mr Trump had obstructed justice.

The first prong was to defend his own integrity in regards to dealings with Russians.

Any finding that could arise against the President would have another hurdle - a longstanding Justice Department stance against indicting a sitting president.

Regarding testimony by fired FBI Director James Comey, Sessions said Comey told him after talking to the president that he was concerned about proper communications protocols between Justice and the White House. When the briefing ended, as The Post previously reported, Trump asked everyone to leave the room except for Coats and CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
