Special counsel probes Trump for possible obstruction

No longer is he merely focused on Moscow's efforts to interfere in the 2016 election, meaning Mueller appears also to be zeroing in on Trump's actions since taking office on January 20.

The news, if true, would mark a significant turning point as up until now Trump hasn't directly been suspected of major wrongdoing - the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been investigating the Republican president's campaign machinery for possible collusion with Russian Federation.

The special counsel overseeing the probe into Russia's alleged meddling in the USA election is looking at whether President Donald Trump tried to obstruct justice, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed officials. Warner responded that "the criminal piece of the investigation will be handled by the special counsel, but if we find facts we can turn this over to the special counsel" and "report them" to Mueller's office.

The three officials the Post says Mueller is interviewing are Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers and Richard Ledgett, the recently retired deputy NSA director.

Comey seemed to hint that the feds were coming for Trump during his Senate Intelligence Committee testimony.

Coats and Rogers refused to comply with the president's requests, officials said.

In testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last week, Comey affirmed that he previously told Trump he was not personally being investigated in the FBI's counterintelligence probe.

Accusations of obstruction arose last month when Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

Trump is not the first president to be subjected to a special counsel investigation, nor the first president to protest it.

The news came the same week as Trump friend Chris Ruddy floated the possibility that Trump would fire Mueller, who was appointed to head up the investigation after Trump fired Comey. When asked about a letter he wrote recommending firing Comey, Rosenstein said that Mueller could be looking into the decision-making process for the firing - and he was therefore "not at liberty to talk about that now".

Accounts by Comey and other officials of their conversations with the president could become central pieces of evidence if Mueller decides to pursue an obstruction case.

The poll also finds that 68 percent of Americans are at least moderately concerned Trump or his campaign associates had inappropriate links to Russian Federation.

The special counsel appointed to investigate Russian influence in the 2016 presidential campaign has met with a Senate committee probing the same matter. "I will defend the integrity of that investigation".

The fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director said ultimately it was up to Mueller to make a determination whether the president crossed a legal line. It is unclear if McCabe, Comey's successor, has informed Trump of the change in the scope of the probe.
