Trump denounces 'single greatest witch hunt in American history'

Malcolm, who worked for Trump's FBI director pick, Chris Wray, when Wray was head of the DOJ's criminal division, spoke after a Washington Post report said Mueller's investigation has now widened to determine whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

"When I chose to just do it, I said to myself, I said "You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should've won", Mr. Trump told NBC.

The president didn't clarify what exactly he was referring to in the early morning tweet, however, he has frequently described reports about possible ties between members of his campaign and Russian Federation as a 'witch hunt'.

SHAPIRO: Devlin Barrett of The Washington Post, thanks very much. After the two leaders met in NY last month, Mr. Trump called their relationship "fantastic". On Monday, a Trump friend said the president was considering dismissing Mueller though the White House later said he had no plans to do so.

Why is the president being investigated?

Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee on June 8 he believed Trump had directed him in February to drop an FBI probe into former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, that was part of the broader Russian Federation investigation.

Testifying last week before the same panel, Mr. Comey recalled that Mr. Trump had asked him to "let go" of a probe into one-time national security adviser Michael Flynn - exposing the President to accusations of obstruction of justice, a potentially impeachable offense. But days later he said in an NBC interview that he had chosen to fire Mr. Comey before getting their input and he was thinking of "this Russian Federation thing" when he did it. He is a good guy.

"You and I agree that the American people deserve a full accounting of attempts to meddle in both our democratic processes and the impartial administration of justice".

The White House has said the president "has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn". The investigations, however, have cast a shadow over his five-month presidency.

But those details do not appear to have swayed the allies and surrogates of the president, who have stepped up attacks and criticisms of Mueller's handling of the investigation.

They include Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, director of the National Security Agency, and his former deputy director, Richard Ledget, the Post reported.

The probe "could examine the thorny question of whether Mr. Trump improperly interfered in an ongoing investigation" by firing Comey, according to the newspaper.

The Post, citing unnamed sources, said the investigation into the president's own conduct began shortly after Trump fired Comey on May 9.

A separate Washington Post report has said that Mr. Coats told associates in March that the president had asked him to try to get the Federal Bureau of Investigation to back off.
