Trump orders United States visa applicants to provide social media details”

As Reuters reports, the Trump administration now requires usa visa applicants worldwide to disclose their social media handles, which will be taken into account when deciding whether or not they can get a visa to visit or work in the United States. One estimation said that the questions would apply to about 65,000 visa applicants every year. If refused, visitors could be denied entry into the U.S.

The new questionnaire will ask for social media handles dating back over the last five years and biographical information dating back 15 years.

About 85% of those apply for visas are granted them, he said. There is no suggestion that travellers will have to surrender passwords of their accounts. The State Department requested the right to ask for this information back on May 3, as USA Today notes, and the Office of Budget and Management quietly approved the change on May 23.

"We are very concerned that if the proposed changes are implemented, global undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, and scientific collaborators may be discouraged from coming to the United States", the letter said, according to Newsweek. New questions ask applicants to provide more personal information, including their social media accounts for last five years. This latest request is far milder than other attempted changes, such as ban on travelers from predominantly Muslim countries.

After a weekend of chaos at airports and consulates as travellers and officials struggled to adapt to the new rules, the United States courts stepped in and halted the measure.

"Compiling the requested information, particularly for those who do not keep meticulous records, could take several hours at a minimum, and possibly days", the American Immigration Lawyers Association argued in opposition of the proposal last month. "They weren't thinking about what might look suspicious to a consular official".

"A lot of people have opinions on what's been going on in this country, but it doesn't mean they hate America".

The State Department says it will continue to follow USA laws on when it can refuse entry to a visitor.

"Social media sites and applications have been propaganda multipliers, allowing them to connect with potential followers across countries, cultures and languages", McCaul wrote. Under that pilot, USCIS screeners requested social media information from visa applicants, then checked the information against a tool developed by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency. The proposal is in line with a previous directive from the State Department for all US embassies and consulates to draw up criteria for "population sets" needing extra scrutiny before receiving USA visas. The expanded questionnaire is just the latest in a number of controversial measures created to better control immigration, including the executive order from January which banned people from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the United States. This alarmed former Obama administration officials and State Department staffers, who "fought an intense, behind-the-scenes battle" to stop the efforts, Isikoff reports, citing "multiple sources familiar with the events".
