White House officials deny claim Trump seeking Mueller firing”

The friend to President Donald Trump who claimed the President is considering firing the special counsel leading the FBI investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election stood by his remarks Tuesday, adding that he believes special counsel Robert Mueller is "illegitimate". "Special counsel Mueller may be fired only for good cause, and I am required to put that cause in writing".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he has confidence in the Department of Justice's special counsel investigating Russian interference in USA elections.

The comments came a day after a close friend of President Donald Trump was quoted in a television interview as saying the president was considering dismissing Mueller.

"I don't think Newt said that", Gingrich told reporters.

Replying to a question from Sen.

Mueller and former FBI Director James Comey worked closely for years in the George W. Bush administration, when Mueller was FBI director and Comey was deputy attorney general.

After initially being praised by Republicans and Democrats for his integrity, Mueller has had his impartiality as special counsel questioned by some Trump supporters in recent days. "I think he's weighing that option".

"I don't think that's a question for me to answer", Rosenstein responded.

The responsibility for appointing (or theoretically firing) Mueller lies with Rosenstein because his boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, recused himself in March from all investigations involving Russian Federation and the 2016 elections.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says he will "defend the integrity" of the special counsel's investigation into Russian interference in the USA elections.

Schiff told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Tuesday that "I don't think the Congress would sit still and allow the president to pick his own investigator".

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, asked Rosenstein at a budget hearing Tuesday what he would do if Trump ordered him to fire Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the USA elections and possible Russian ties to Trump's campaign.

"I never said I spoke to the President", he added. Brian Schatz about the scope of Sessions' recusal, Rosenstein said Sessions "actually does not know what we're investigating, and I'm not going to be talking about it publicly".

According to Justice Department rules, special counsel Robert Mueller can not be fired without good cause.

Ruddy appeared to be basing his remarks, at least in part, on comments from Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump's legal team, who told ABC in an interview Sunday that he was "not going to speculate" on whether Trump might at some point order Rosenstein to fire Mueller. After responding that he had not, Rosenstein reassured Shaheen of his confidence in the process. Doubt, however, has been cast on that explanation because of cryptic testimony from former FBI Director James Comey last week.

Because Sessions had recused himself from the Russia investigation over his connection to Trump's campaign and his undisclosed meetings with the Russian ambassador, it was Rosenstein's decision to appoint a special counsel to lead the investigation.

High-profile supporters of President Donald Trump are turning on special counsel Robert Mueller, the man charged with investigating Russian interference in the US election and possible collusion with Trump's campaign.
