Fire safety reviews 'already taking place' at Manchester tower blocks

Fire safety reviews 'already taking place' at Manchester tower blocks”

The inferno Wednesday morning at the 24-story Grenfell Tower has led to community anger and protests over the government's response.

The building was built in 1974 and had recently been renovated, in 2016.

"There is desperate stress and sadness", he told reporters.

The focus of criticism centres on the cladding fitted to external walls on the 1970s concrete block as part of a £8.7 million ($11 million, 9.9 million euros) refit completed a year ago.

But a New Zealand cladding company told Newshub aluminium composite panels have been used on buildings here since the 1980s, and possibly earlier.

The 24 year old perished while trying to flee her flat on the 20th floor of the tower. The building was outfitted with internal sprinklers and its 400 residents were able to safely evacuate.

Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation Limited (KCTMO) is responsible for the management of almost 10,000 properties on behalf of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the municipal authority, including the Grenfell tower block.

Initial reports had the death toll sitting at six people; that number has now jumped up to 12.

"Not just the immediate recovery of the bodies we have found but the full search of that whole building, we could be talking weeks, we could be talking months - it is a very long process".

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, though some have mentioned the explosion of an appliance could be the cause.

Leader of the House of Commons and former Tory leadership candidate Andrea Leadsom was also slammed during her visit. "The fire was small in the kitchen". I can't go out!' and waved a piece of fabric for people to see. "There was no alarm".

The death toll in the massive fire that engulfed a 24-storey tower here almost doubled to 30 today amid fears that it could climb to "triple figures", even as Scotland Yard launched a criminal investigation into the cause of one of the worst fire tragedies in the country.

The police stressed in a statement that "there is nothing to suggest the fire was started deliberately".

"We as the police, we investigate criminal offences - I am not sitting here and saying there are criminal offences that have been committed, that's why you do an investigation, to establish it", he said. "That's why you do an investigation".

Pressure on the government to take quick steps to prevent a similar fire is growing as it emerged that the cladding used on Grenfell Tower has been used on other high rise blocks across the UK. "Police are not identifying people. they are using protocols for terrorist incidents to manage civil disaster".

"Government is making money available, we are ensuring we are going to get to the bottom of what happened, we will ensure that people are rehoused, but we need to make sure that that actually happens".

"I do sense the anger", Conservative lawmaker Andrea Leadsom said as she faced the fury of local residents during a tour of the site.
