London fire: 58 missing, presumed dead”

London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton said they still did not the cause of the fire, where it started or why it spread in such a way.

After visiting the site of the devastating fire in a 24-storey tower building in London, May said on Thursday that she wanted to make sure the bad tragedy is properly investigated. The death toll is still expected to rise substantially.

Families searching for information about their loved ones have, meanwhile, blanketed the area near the tower with posters searching for answers. The firefighters held their hands as they weaved their way through the building to escape the inferno.

"She should have been there with the residents".

Britain's Prime Minister, Theresa May, arrives at 10 Downing Street, in central London, Britain June 16, 2017.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William have also met with residents who were affected by the fire.

Around 70 people are missing, according to Britain's Press Association, and identification of the victims is proving very hard.

Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn also visited the site, telling community leaders "the truth has to come out".

Commander Stuart Cundy of the Metropolitan police said the absolute priority was retrieving bodies and identifying the dead, as part of an ongoing investigation carried out with the fire service.

Police have said 30 people are confirmed dead after the blaze, while media reports have said more than 70 are still unaccounted for. Instead they released a statement promising to rehouse as many people locally as they could. "And once it's safe, they are going to go into the building", he said, in an attempt to calm the crowds.

Rescue personnel have had difficulty reaching the top floors of the charred, 24-story tower.

London police said an investigation, led by a detective from its homicide and major crime unit, would examine whether criminal offences had been committed although they said there was nothing to suggest the fire was started deliberately.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said many questions must be answered about safety for the scores of other apartment buildings around the British capital.

The tower is in the North Kensington neighborhood, a working-class, multi-ethnic area next to some of the richest neighborhoods in Britain.

Grenfell Tower was home to around 600 people and whole families remain missing after the fire, which forced residents to flee through black smoke down the single stairwell, jump out of windows or even drop their children to safety.

A tenant group had complained for years about the risk of a fire in the building, owned by the local government in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Emergency workers walk on the roof of the fire-gutted Grenfell Tower in London, Friday, June 16, 2017, after a fire engulfed the 24-storey building on Wednesday morning.

"There is desperate stress and sadness", he told reporters.
