Missing, Feared Dead in London Fire

Specialist sniffer dogs are on the scene to identify victims in the ashes.

"They put pretty panels on the outside, so the rich people who lived opposite wouldn't have to look at a horrendous block", he said.

"I really hope the number of fatalities does not reach triple figures", Cundy said.

"Sadly we do anticipate the death toll will rise - we haven't done our searches of the top floors yet", she told reporters at the scene.

Thirty-seven people are still receiving treatment in hospitals across London, with 17 still in a critical condition. Police said they may never be able to identify all the bodies of those who died.

The British Prime Minister is now asking for a public investigation. But the shock at its scale turned to anger and recriminations on Thursday. It is unknown how the children escaped the blaze or where their parents and little sister are.

London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton said Thursday the search of Grenfell Tower will be a "very long process".

A massive fire raced through the 24-story high-rise apartment buildi.

"It still hasn't completely hit me that we've lost our house", she said. "That's what should be driving the government response to this", he said, adding that everything had to be done to reassure people living in similar buildings in a matter of days. Some residents said no alarm had sounded.

On Friday fire crews again used water to damp down the charred building as they began a third day of picking through the tower's charred remains. "How are we going to get out?"

He said later: "We must and will do everything in our power to ensure the truth about this tragedy comes out".

London mayor Sadiq Khan was heckled by an angry crowd as he passed through the west London neighbourhood, with some demanding to know how he planned to handle the crisis.

"They tell you "if you are not happy, go and rent". "As you can appreciate, it's a very large building with a large number of people in there".

"It's in the public interest that the residents and survivors of Grenfell Tower are at the heart of this inquiry - and that they are properly supported and represented", she said.

Others gathered seeking news of the missing. Gottardi told his father in separate calls that suffocating smoke in the stairs kept them inside their apartment and awaiting rescue. "The phone was ringing but they didn't reply to us".

Numerous displaced are living in churches and community centers. "Maybe 70 percent are from Somalia, Sudan, Morocco".

"It is also heartening to see the incredible generosity of community volunteers rallying to help those affected by this bad event", the queen said.

The queen's grandsons, Prince William and Prince Harry, along with William's wife Kate, donated to a relief fund organised by London's local Evening Standard newspaper. "He kept repeating over and over again, 'People have lost their lives, I can't bear it.' He'll be blaming himself even though there was nothing he could do - and he had no way of knowing the block was a death trap".

She lived on the 20th floor of the Grenfell Tower block in north Kensington with her mother, Mary Mendy, who is also feared dead.

By Thursday morning, there was no sign of life in or around the blackened hulk.

Outside the security cordons around the base of the tower, impromptu tributes appeared, with photos of missing people, messages of condolences and flowers.

One of the girls is said to be in a coma, with her sister reportedly seriously traumatized.
