Police negotiating with armed man in Melbourne”

A man armed with a handgun is holding police at bay after barricading himself in a house in Melbourne's north with a woman and four children inside.

The siege began at about 2pm on Friday after police arrived at a property in Epping.

Victoria Police spokesman, Acting Sgt Adam West said: 'We're now trying to negotiate with a man.

There are reports of more than 20 police cars on the scene.

It's alleged that police spoke to the man who initially exited the house but went back inside and refused to come out.

'It's believed he might be armed with a hand gun'.

Road diversions are now in place around the area.
