3-year-old girl dies during dental procedure in Stockton, California”

A 3-year-old girl from California who went to a dentist's office for a fairly routine procedure Monday died for unknown reasons.

They gathered at the surgery center where Daleyza Avila-Hernandez's heart stopped beating, while she was under anesthesia.

David Thompson with the Children's Dental Surgery Center in Stockton said, "The risks are different, the process is different, our emergency response is different, and we have drills to handle certain types of emergencies".

"All I did was I took my daughter to the dentist because they were going to fix her teeth and about 30 minutes later they brought her back dead."

Children who can not sit still in a dental chair or who are there by referral generally have "extreme" dental needs.

"They over medicated her, that's what they did because even St. Joseph's stated at the doctors that she was overmedicated", Dawson said. Two tooth extractions, two molars removed, and two teeth capped is what she was scheduled to have done. She remembers standing up, knowing that they were coming for someone's child, but it never occurred to her that it was for her daughter.

The nurse told the couple that maybe their little girl had an underlying heart problem that they weren't aware of and reassured that they needn't worry.

"When we left for the hospital she ran after me, got into the van and she was very happy", Hernandez added.

Avila disagreed, saying her daughter was "very healthy". But the little girl never came out. As the Stockton Police Department and the Dental Board of California investigate Daleyza's death, her mother said she just can't understand how a trip to a dental center could take her daughter's life.

Mr Thompson said staff members at the centre were well trained and have years of experience. That's our mission, that's why we're here. "It's risky. Not everyone wants to do it", he told Fox 40.

A cause of death has not yet been identified.

The family is seeking answers on how a simple dental procedure could end in death.
