Barty blasts into Nottingham quarterfinals

Barty blasts into Nottingham quarterfinals”

Konta took the first set, but the world number eight couldn't seal the silverware in the second set tie-break and eventually slumped to a 2-6, 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 loss.

Johanna Konta's hopes of claiming a first grass-court title were dashed by an admirable Donna Vekic fightback in the Aegon Open final. She had a strong start in Nottingham after breaking Vekic in the first game of the match, and then dominating the opening set. Pironkova won 82% first serve points while struggled on second serve getting only 35% points.

It looked like Vekic may have blown her chance when she allowed Konta to get back on serve after initially forging ahead in the decider. Full credit to her for playing incredibly well.

"It's pretty unbelievable", 20-year-old Vekic said on Eurosport.

Up next for the Aussie could be the daunting task of playing against Britain's No.1 on home soil - she'll take on the victor of tomorrow's matchup between Johanna Konta and Yanina Wickmayer. "For Donna and I, heading into Wimbledon, we just want to play on the surface as much as possible".

Again Konta fell 3-1 behind but after recovering to draw back level and then lead, it seemed she had overcome a mid-match wobble. "Jo played wonderful, she's having an fantastic year, but I was just trying to focus on myself and serve as good as I can and be aggressive".

Barty needed just under an hour to break Fett five times and claim the victory, 6-2, 6-1.
