Doctors call Scalise's condition improved

Doctors call Scalise's condition improved”

The gunman, James Hodgkinson from the St Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, was shot dead by officers in Mr Scalise's security detail.

The shot fired at Scalise left perhaps hundreds of bullet fragments internally, many of which may never be removed because surgery might be more unsafe than leaving them in place, Sava said. The congressman's risk of death was now substantially lower because doctors have controlled the bleeding and his vital signs have stabilised. Additional operations will be needed in the coming days to manage Scalise's abdominal injuries and other broken bones, Sava said, adding he hoped that hemorrhaging "is not going to be our biggest enemy any longer". The rifle blast left possibly hundreds of bullet fragments that the doctor said will not likely be removed.

Rep. Steve Scalise remains in critical condition at a Washington, DC-area hospital following a shooting on Wednesday.

Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone.

Doctors will first perform "damage control" to stop any bleeding, and address other critical problems, like preventing leakage from the bowel.

Congress members and aides watched Mr Scalise drag himself through the dirt field after he was shot, leaving a trail of blood behind him.

"We are encouraged by improvement in his condition over the last 36 hours", Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said. He remains sedated but has been able to respond to his family.

Scalise has received multiple blood transfusions, which can affect clotting, something doctors will monitor closely.

Hodgkinson's wife told media members this week that she was shocked by the actions of her estranged husband. Sava said Scalise "clearly knows" his family is there and "appreciates" their presence.

"She says she's grateful to President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and all of Scalise's Capitol Hill colleagues "who have reached out to us during this most challenging time. So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you". Scalise was hit as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice outside Washington D.C. He was shot in the hip but the bullet tore through his pelvis and injured internal organs.

Trump brought up Scalise - and the recently released captive of North Korea, American student Otto Wambier - during remarks in Miami on changes he planned to make on the United States' Cuba policy.

House Speaker Paul Ryan has paid a visit to wounded Majority Whip Steve Scalise at the hospital.
