Donald Trump is 'considering terminating Russia special counsel Robert Mueller'

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Tuesday that he sees no reason to fire Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election.

If Mr Trump instructs Mr Rosenstein to dump Mr Mueller, it would evoke memories of 1973, when two top Justice Department officials, Mr Elliott Richardson and Mr Bill Ruckelshaus, resigned rather than obey then President Richard Nixon's order to fire Mr Archibald Cox, the special prosecutor conducting the Watergate investigation.

Why would Trump consider firing Mueller?

"I think he's weighing that option", said Ruddy.

Mr Mueller, who was tasked by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein with overseeing the justice department's investigation, has started selecting members of his team, many of them criminal law experts.

Here's why. According to the rules, technically only the attorney general can fire a special counsel.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says that a history of political giving is not a disqualifier for those who work for the Department of Justice's special counsel investigating Russian interference in USA elections.

The talk about dismissing Mr Mueller appeared to be coming from Trump allies, including some close to White House strategist Steve Bannon, who are increasingly frustrated with the prospect of a long and winding probe.

Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy admitted he did not speak with President Trump about the notion of firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

"With respect to this subject, only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment", White House press secretary Sean Spicer also told NPR.

The top Justice Department official overseeing the investigation into Russian Federation also assured senators that Mueller has been granted complete independence to do his work.

The tweet from Conway came after the Trump White House had to put out a fire caused by Trump confidant Chris Ruddy.

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters aboard Air Force One that "while the president has the right to" fire Robert Mueller, "he has no intention to do so".

CHRISTOPHER RUDDY: Well, I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., if he's seen any reason for Mueller to be fired, Rosenstein said, "I have not".

Sources say Trump that was telling staff, visitors and advisers last week that he felt Mueller had become part of a "witch hunt' against him and wanted him gone".

House Speaker Paul Ryan says the White House and President Donald Trump should let the special counsel's investigation continue, and await vindication.

Ruddy later confirmed that he and the president hadn't discussed the matter personally.

"If there was a basis upon which there was a question that raised the kind of issues that are serious, as in the situation with James Comey, the President has authority to take action".

But after the evidence of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey last week, Mr Gingrich said he had changed his mind.

"I have determined that a special counsel is necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome", Rosenstein said last month.

He told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday that Mueller "did not hire a single Republican in the first wave" of staffing for his investigation.
