It was really cool - Thomas revels in record-breaking US Open round

He putted away from the cup, on a line parallel to the hole, moving the ball two feet and allowing gravity to turn it 90 degrees right, down the incline, into the cup.

"The finish was awesome".

"My wonderful daughter brought me here", Erwin said.

But not long after he signed for his record score and an 11-under 205, he began to appreciate the significance of a 63 on this day.

Thomas said he knew the putt was for a 63, and he told his caddie as they walked down the fairway, "Let's try to become a part of history". "To hear that crowd go insane when I made that putt was really cool, but not only that, more importantly, to give myself a better chance to win the tournament". I felt like I've been playing pretty well all week, and didn't have quite the numbers to show for it. "Oh it's so long.' Jack loved that, because all of a sudden the field goes from 156 players to maybe 100 players".

Also starting strong was Justin Thomas with tap-in birdies on his opening two holes to reach 4 under. Thomas made six birdies and one bogey on his front nine in the third round, and Hoffman birdied three of his first five holes. He was 10 under.

"Regardless, I'm going to have to go out and play a solid, good round tomorrow [Sunday]".

"If somebody shoots nine under tomorrow in the top few (as Thomas did on Saturday) then I'll have to shoot 10, I guess". It's the best I've struck the ball in a long time. I've just got to keep going.

Not to be overlooked was Si Woo Kim, who captured The Players Championship last month. At age 30, he is the oldest of the five players within two shots of the lead.

The 24-year-old's score is the lowest in relation to par in the history of the US Open, surpassing the eight-under 63 carded by Johnny Miller to win at Oakmont in 1973. He made an eagle on his final hole at the Sony Open in January to shoot 59, and he went on to break the PGA Tour's 72-hole scoring record.

At the end of 54 holes, we might not have a star-studded leaderboard at the 2017 U.S. Open, but at least we have one rife with possibilities.

He rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt on No. 5 from the edge of the green that broke so severely that he stood with his toes facing the hole and rapped the ball toward his left foot. In the hay left of the 12th fairway, he gouged it out with a 9-iron and watched it roll to 10 feet.

And with the tees moved up on the 15th hole to make it reachable, Thomas hit a 3-wood that rolled off the back slope of the green to 6 feet.

On the longest course ever for a major, the cut was the lowest at the U.S. Open since 1990. "When you give us soft greens and not much wind, you know there are going to be some good scores". "My goal heading into this season was to take everything I was already doing, and just to make it all work a little bit better".

Fowler goes into the third round knowing he got away with having something less than his best stuff on Friday, but he's just 1 shot off the lead after 36 holes. A lot of them had to come from far back going into the weekend, and it was hard to put together two good rounds. The top 18 players on the leaderboard going into the weekend have combined for zero majors. He held his arms straight out and shook them because, he said later, he was hungry and he'd been shaky and it was time to make some history, and he didn't want to get all quivery over a putt he could kick in if, say, he was on vacation in the Bahamas hanging out with his bros Jordan Spieth and Smylie Kaufman and Rickie Fowler, Fowler famous there for his T-shirt reading, "Hope Your Day Is As Nice As Your Butt".
