Kite looks back on windy final round at Pebble

Staying that deep into the red might not prove as easy.

Tom Kite knows a little something about hard conditions for the final round of the U.S. Open.

You see, Miller also shot at 63 at the U.S. Open, in what is considered by some the greatest round of golf ever in major tournament.

And yet, Thomas won't even walk to the first tee box Sunday with the lead. Just being in a U.S. Open and seeing and hearing so many birdies.

Thomas had 310 yards to the pin for his second shot to the 18th and hit a flawless three-wood onto the green to set up the eagle putt from seven feet which completed a record-breaking 63.

Fowler was among those who wouldn't mind seeing the conditions toughen up for the final 18 holes. Until you start talking about it - I mean, when you play you don't think about it too much, especially in two balls when it's a nice flow to the game. He spent all day in the knee-high fescue and shot 78, his worst U.S. Open score.

Rickie Fowler. After a tough second round, Fowler bounced back nicely with a 68 on Saturday and has put himself in excellent position to win his first major championship at the U.S. Open on Sunday. And he wasn't through.

Scheffler isn't the only amateur making waves at Erin Hills, with Cameron Champ two shots back of the lead at 5 under. And then Morgan came undone. Thomas finished a round that included nine birdies and two bogeys with an 18-hole eagle.

Fowler fell away badly after starting the final round of this year's Masters just one off the pace and belief will surely be key for a player who has regularly contended in majors without taking the prize. He shot 81 the next day in a blustery wind.

Snedeker has never won a major, either, though he has been through the emotional ringer at Augusta National and Royal Lytham & St. Annes.

Instead, Reed was forced to settle for par on the final hole and a 65 for the round. Billy Horschel was tied for the 36-hole lead at Merion.

The thrilling finish vaulted Thomas into the clubhouse lead on 11 under par late in the third round but with numerous contenders still out on the course and threatening to catch him. No one had a chance. Five players are at double-digit under par through 54 holes.

McIlroy birdied four of his last six holes at Erin Hills to improve seven shots on his opening 78, but still missed the cut by four shots. Furyk closed with a 72. The Florida State product's five birdies included three, 2-putt birdies at 1, 14 and 18, contributing to 32 total putts. In fact you have to look down to 17th place on the leaderboard before you find a major victor in South African Louis Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open champion.

"I have pictured winning the US Open a lot of times before". He made an 18-foot curler on the long par-4 fifth hole, rolling the ball up through the fringe to find the right angle to the hole. The shots still must be hit, the putts made.

Defending champion Dustin Johnson probably didn't feel so badly by the end of a most peculiar day. "I'm not sure where the days of the 24- to 29-yard-wide fairways that we played every time went". The tournament was never really in doubt after that, though the wind arrived and Kaymer couldn't maintain the pace.
