London fire: Protests held as fire anger increases

As the fire raged, Rania started recording on Facebook Live from her apartment where she was stuck due to thick smoke.

Police said on Saturday that at least 58 people had been confirmed or were assumed to have died in this week's blaze at the Grenfell Tower block.

Exterior cladding that was added during a recent refurbishment might have played a part, local residents have said.

"There's a need for the public to hear you say in words of one syllable: 'Something awful has happened; something has gone badly wrong".

The death toll that London police gave Saturday includes the 30 who had already been confirmed dead. British media have reported that contractors installed a cheaper, less flame-resistant type of exterior paneling on the 24-story tower in a renovation that was completed just previous year. "My heart goes out to those affected", Cundy said.

Opponents said Mrs May's handling of the fire has thrust her position further into doubt.

The local authority, which owns the tower block where families rented their homes, says it is doing all it can to support the victims and to help the relief operation. A new sign was put up, removing that detail. The death toll is expected to rise with dozens still missing.

The 24-story Grenfell Tower in the north Kensington neighbourhood in west London is near several major transport hubs. Hundreds have been left homeless, putting more pressure on officials in a city plagued by a chronic housing shortage.

"The response of the emergency services, National Health Service and the community has been heroic", the prime minister said in a statement.

"Newspapers are calling May's decision not to meet survivors the day after the blaze her "Hurricane Katrina" moment", NPR's Frank Langfitt notes. A memorial wall has been created for people to write messages to the missing.

"Government is making money available, we're ensuring that we're going to get to the bottom of what's happened, we will ensure that people are rehoused", the prime minister said.

"I said 'where are you?' He said 'I'm in the flat, '" Ali said.

A total of 58 people are presumed dead after the devastating fire in a London tower block, police chief Stuart Cundy told reporters on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II observed a minute of silence, along with her husband, Prince Philip, before the annual parade marking her official birthday.

May has ordered a public inquiry into the incident and also said that the government will bear the victims' cost of legal representation. The queen was born in April but celebrates in June.

NHS England says the injured are being treated in four London hospitals. Grief over a high-rise tower blaze that killed dozens of p. More than $3.8 million has been raised for the victims.

Londoners and others have also donated huge amounts of food, water and clothing, and shelter, to survivors.

A separate protest was held at Westminster, central London, on Friday evening. The meeting is unlikely to quell complaints that May has been slow to reach out to victims, despite her announcement of a $6.4 million emergency fund to help the displaced families.

One of her closest allies, Damian Green, defended May's seemingly aloof response to the tragedy.
