PM Modi conveys India's strong support to Afghan in combating terror”

"Though we have become a member of the SCO only today, our relations with the region have been historic", Modi said.

The Business Council is an important part of the SCO and will play an even more significant role with growing focus of the grouping on economic aspects. He also thanked SCO countries for granting membership to India.

The decision to give full membership to Pakistan was made at the SCO heads of states meeting in Ufa, Russia in 2015. With the accession, the strength of the grouping rose to eight and its footprints expanded from Central Asia to South Asia. New Delhi has acceded to a set of 38 documents covering a range of activities of India in the organisation which began in 2001 in Shanghai.

Issues related to cooperation in fight against global terrorism, security and situation in the Middle East and Afghanistan were on the agenda the SCO summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday conducted talks with the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani and expressed solidarity and complete support to the country in "resolutely and effectively" combating the challenge of terrorism.

Asserting that coordinated efforts are needed to tackle the menace of terrorism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said terrorism amounts to blatant violation of human values and rights. "Peace and stability in Afghanistan can also take benefit of the SCO", he added.

Putin also said it is necessary to strengthen coordination between the SCO member states, as he added that Daesh is preparing "new plans" to destabilize Central Asia and southern Russian Federation. Prime Minister's Advisor Sartaj Aziz, Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastgir and Minister of State for Petroleum Jam Kamal were accompanying the prime minister.

An Indian foreign ministry official said that as it was the first contact between the leaders since Sharif underwent surgery, Modi enquired about the Pakistani leader's health.
