Theresa May admits initial response to Grenfell Tower was 'not good enough'

Theresa May admits initial response to Grenfell Tower was 'not good enough'”

Elsewhere, more than 300 people held a rally in front of Kensington Town Hall, calling for answers into Wednesday's blaze which destroyed the high-rise building and cost at least 30 lives.

He called into the station and fumed at the "economic philosophy" of the past 25 years after at least 58 people were killed as a result of the fire at the west London tower block. "The bodies of 16 people have been recovered from the building and taken to a mortuary", he added, while the figure of 58 may rise.

"She should have been there with the residents".

May met police and firefighters at the West London site on Thursday, to receive a briefing from the emergency services.

Scotland Yard has launched a criminal inquiry into the fire as it has emerged that the type of cladding panels used on the building have been widely prohibited on tall structures in the US since 2012 because of its flammability.

While the deadly blaze at the Grenfell Tower in north Kensington has prompted an outpouring of generosity, it has also unleashed fury at the authorities as the charred tower was cast as a deadly symbol of a divided society.

He said: "You've got to build in resilience and safety through regulation, people have got to constantly practice for disasters".

The fire has been a major test for Prime Minister Theresa May, whose Conservative Party is clinging to power after losing majority control of Parliament to a Labour surge in a snap election this month.

"Our focus has been on those that we know were in Grenfell Tower. How did they allow this tragedy to happen when it could have easily been avoided?"

"There is considerable damage within Grenfell Tower", he said.

"They have been left with nothing - no bank cards, no money, no means of caring for their children or relatives".

The council said: 'We plan to house residents of Grenfell Tower as locally as we can.

Mr Cundy has warned the search and recovery operation is going to take a "significant" amount of time - with both the police and the London Fire Brigade saying it will take weeks to complete.

The Syria Solidarity Campaign said Alhajali, a civil engineering student, had been in a flat on the 14th floor when the fire broke out, and had spent two hours on the phone to a friend in Syria.
