Zidane joy as Madrid reign supreme

Ronaldo scored twice in Real's 4-1 thrashing of Juventus in Cardiff on Saturday as Madrid became the first side to retain the Champions League.

Real extends its lead as the most successful side in the history of the competition with AC Milan's seven titles a long way back as second best.

Juventus equalised in the 27th minute with a volley by Mandzukic.

His second goal in the final against Juventus was his 600th career goal for club and country, but the former Manchester United winger has clarified the debate regarding his position, saying he will never be the main striker.

A long-range deflected effort by Casemiro and a neat finish by the irrepressible Ronaldo effectively settled one of the most entertaining finals for years, a late tap-in by substitute Marco Asensio adding the final gloss.

Mundo Deportivo was more generous as it lauded the work by Real coach Zidane to win a second UCL after just 18 months in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"I think we feel like an incredible team, and we need to just keep doing what we are doing, because I think we can win many more titles in the future". The reigning world player of the year proved himself once again to be the man for the big occasion when he took advantage of some uncharacteristically poor defending to curl in a right-footed shot.

It was the culmination of a counterattack of breathtaking speed launched by Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

Leonardo Bonucci's deep ball was brought down by Alex Sandro, who cut it back to Higuain in the penalty area. The last season was also very cool. But the magnificence evoked memories of another showpiece staged in the United Kingdom when Zidane volleyed into the top corner in Glasgow to help Madrid beat Bayer Leverkusen.

Ronaldo's double gave him 42 Real goals this season, spearheading the Spanish giants' first LaLiga and European Cup double since 1957-58.

But Bale was reduced to the role of bit-part player after recent injury problems, sent on only for the final 13 minutes at the National Stadium of Wales with the game already won. Zinedine Zidane's men also won their first La Liga title in five years a week before that.

"To win at home is a dream come true", said Bale after lifting the famous trophy for a third time.
