Bill Cosby smirks at deadlocked jury”

A deadlocked Pennsylvania jury battling to reach a verdict in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial was to deliberate a fifth day Friday as to whether or not he drugged and molested a woman more than 13 years ago. They've been deliberating for almost 40 hours over four days.

The panel, which has now considered the comic's fate for a whopping 41-hours, were ordered to return to court at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning to resume discussion.

As he described reaching into Constand's trousers, Cosby testified, "I go into the area that is somewhere between permission and rejection". But the atmosphere remains calm, with accusers and supporters even holding hands.

In 2014, Cosby's history of alleged sexual assault resurfaced after comedian Hannibal Buress referenced it while performing at a Philadelphia comedy show, with the clip becoming a viral hit.

Jurors who had appeared stressed and even angry leaving court on previous nights seemed more upbeat as they departed Thursday night, despite enduring another marathon session. Each count carries a sentence of up to 10 years. Constand says Cosby gave her pills that made her woozy, then violated her.

In those cases, jurors who take days to come to a decision, often are engaged in a "battle of wits", he said. One required the jury to find that Constand could not "consent", another that she was "unconscious", and a third that Cosby "administered an intoxicant".

But some of Cosby's accusers, women who have attended the trial or been on watch for the verdict, left the courtroom in tears.

"They're conflicted about the inconsistencies in Ms. Constand's testimony", spokesman Andrew Wyatt said.

A hung jury would represent a clear victory for Cosby, who would avoid what could have been years in prison for three counts of aggravated indecent assault. Two questions pertained to a review of parts of Cosby's account to authorities, and two were requests to rehear Constand's account and testimony. If the panel can't break its impasse, O'Neill could declare a hung jury and a mistrial.

The trial outside Philadelphia involves Cosby's sexual encounter with a woman at his home in 2004.

Cosby did not testify at the trial, but the jury heard a police interview with him from 2005 as well as his depositions.

Following the failure to reach a unanimous decision, the judge encouraged the 12 jury members to come to a consensus.

Which also means all the sordid details of drugs and sex, emotionally raw testimony and bellicose defense that were the hallmarks of this case will be replayed again, with their impact lessened by familiarity to all but the new jurors here in the Montgomery Country courthouse. "If i conveyed you were to go back and continue to work, I apologize".

"In most criminal cases, anything short of a conviction is a win for the defense", said Rudovsky, who isn't involved in the case.

Jurors were also keenly focused on what Cosby said about the pills he gave to Constand before their encounter, asking for the second time in deliberations to revisit a portion of the deposition in which the comedian talked about giving Constand "three friends for you to make you relax".

In that case, Cosby would not be found guilty, nor would he be acquitted.
