Brooks Koepka caps a record week with US Open title

Brooks Koepka caps a record week with US Open title”

HAIL THE KING: The 18th hole at Erin Hills had a special flag for the final round of the U.S. Open.

Harman, bidding to become the first left-hander to win a U.S. Open, is a victor on the PGA Tour this year while Thomas is the world number 13, a three-time victor this season and a member of the exclusive "59" club after breaking 60 at the Sony Open this year.

A birdie-laden third round ended with Brian Harman topping the leaderboard on 12 under - the second-lowest score recorded in the event through 54 holes.

The dominance of the final round shook up what had been a crowded leaderboard throughout the weekend, and his first-time victor status continued a streak we've seen in majors that dates back to Jason Day's breakthrough at the 2015 PGA Championship.

However, Matsuyama finished an hour ahead of the other two, Harman began to falter a bit, and Koepka then seized the moment with those three straight birdies for a brilliant finish.

While he'll head back to his residence for the week and pack up, Spieth said he planned to return to Erin Hills on Sunday afternoon, have a beer and watch some of his friends, including Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas, try to win the golf tournament.

T2. Hideki Matsuyama (-12): While the top three players in the world missed the cut, Matsuyama (No. 4), showed world-class stuff down the stretch.

Morgan was at 9-under 135 after two rounds and became the first player to reach 10-under par in the U.S. Open with a 30-foot birdie putt on the third hole of the third round. For the Madison native, the U.S. Open was a family affair.

Thomas bogeyed three of his first five holes to drop back to 8 under.

Tommy Fleetwood with a 11-under par score to finish in fourth place.

Jordan Spieth's little sister was asking more than he could deliver at Erin Hills.

T9. Justin Thomas (-8): The lingering memory from Thomas' 2017 U.S. Open will always be his 63 on Saturday, not only because of its historical relevance but because things got real shaky on Sunday in a hurry as he played his way out of contention. She thought for a second and replied, "16 birdies". He opened with a pair of tap-in birdies and putted for birdie on every hole but the par-3 13th.

Spieth had a nice day considering how the winds have picked up at Erin Hills.

THE BIG EASY: Weekend rain softened the greens at Erin Hills. Palmer shot a 65 after going into the final round trailing by seven shots.

He hit a good putt on No. 2 that got caught the left edge of the cup and spun out, and settled for bogey.

All of which made the disappearance of the world's best players especially hard to explain. Kite says "I don't anticipate this being a bloodletting".

Thomas had 310 yards to the pin for his second shot to the 18th and hit a ideal three-wood onto the green to set up the eagle putt from seven feet which completed a record-breaking 63.

Of the 24 players on the course early, only two are under par for the day - William McGirt and Jordan Spieth.

Harman had been tied with Koepka after his birdie putt on the third did a full circuit of the hole before dropping in, but found heavy rough off the tee on the 12th to make only his third bogey of the week.

Nobody in the top 16 on the leaderboard has won a major.
