Dead, 8 Injured After Van Hits Pedestrians Outside London Mosque

The Metropolitan Police said eight people were taken to hospital and several were seriously injured in the incident which occurred on Seven Sisters Road after 12.20am.

Initially, witnesses reported that the vehicle had apparently veered off the road and into crows outside the mosque, but that it was unclear whether or not it was deliberate.

Several worshippers were in the area at the time of incident after attending Ramzan prayers. Early police caution about declaring the incident to be terrorist-related was interpreted by the community as discriminatory. A 48-year-old man has been arrested.

British Home Secretary Amber Rudd said police "immediately" treated the fatal incident outside a London mosque as a suspected terrorist attack.

"He was screaming, he was saying, "I'm going to kill all Muslims, I'm going to kill all Muslims". He did what he did deliberately to hit and kill as many Muslims as possible, so he is a terrorist".

"So he came back to the main road and I managed to get him to the ground and me and some other guys managed to hold him until the police arrived". Twenty-two people were killed by a suicide bomber at a concert in Manchester in May and eight people were killed in the London Bridge attack earlier this month. Two others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Mahmoud said he was in the mosque shortly after prayers when "a brother came in, quite panicked, and said that somebody had run over a group of people and tried to kill them so we rushed out".

"Muslim communities have been calling for increased action to tackle the growth in hate crime for many years and transformative action must now be taken to tackle not only this incident but the hugely worrying growth in Islamophobia".

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, denounced the incident as "a horrific terrorist attack on innocent people in Finsbury Park".

Mr Corbyn said that, while he had not spoken to the Prime Minister directly, their offices had been in touch, and Theresa May "expressed her condolences for the death and also concerns about what happened last night". "This was an attack on London and all Londoners".

"London is a city of many faiths and many nationalities". He will also be subject of a mental health assessment in due course.

Police said all the victims of the attack, which took place outside Muslim Welfare House, were Muslim.

Harun Khan of the Muslim Council of Britain - citing eyewitness accounts and videos taken at the scene - appeared to confirm this later in the morning.

"He turned left into the alleyway, and he just drove at people", eyewitness Abdiqadir Warra told AFP.

Ten people were hurt, all of them Muslims, with eight of them requiring hospital treatment.

Witnesses said that an imam from the mosque protected the driver of the van from angry members of the public until the police arrived. "He did not say anything".

But another witness at the scene said the attacker did not say anything.

"An advance trauma team from Londons Air Ambulance has also been dispatched by auto", the statement said.

The attacker struck as the area was busy with worshippers who had been at Ramadan night prayers at Finsbury Park Mosque.

"An advance trauma team from London's Air Ambulance has also been dispatched by auto", the statement said.
