England Under-21s must beat Slovakia to advance, admits Aidy Boothroyd”

England Under-21s skipper James Ward-Prowse has admitted that he is eager to "put things right" at U21 Euro 2017 following a succession of disappointing tournament showings.

Aidy Boothroyd has conceded that England can not afford to slip up against Slovakia on Monday as they attempt to keep alive their prospects of reaching the European Under-21 Championship semi-finals.

"It's knockout football now without a doubt", said the former Watford, Colchester, Coventry and Northampton manager. There's six or seven of us from the last time so we've all got those feelings and that hunger to get things right.

England will need to get the ball forward more accurately to Tammy Abraham, unleash their most potent attacking threat, Nathan Redmond, more regularly down the left, and it... Claude was very good to me, he gave me lots of opportunities and I got into the England squad while playing under him.

"It was a fair result in the end and we can certainly play better than we did".

Only the three group winners and best runners-up progress to the semi-finals, and Slovakia are already two points clear following their win over Poland, while England opened their campaign with a goalless draw against Sweden.

"We've got Slovakia and then the hosts on Thursday in front of a packed house".

"I think they did", he said.

Ward-Prowse said: "He's been around and pulled us individually and seen how we are".

"We know we can play better".

"It's great to have him and Steve Holland [Southgate's assistant] around".

"We want to make sure that we're not having those same feelings again.it's not a nice feeling when you don't reach the level that you should do".

"(Lewis) Baker, (James) Ward-Prowse, (Jacob) Murphy are all very good at that, but we couldn't find the room to do that.

"I have got nothing but thanks for him".

He said: "I'm not satisfied because I want to win every game".

"We admit ourselves that we weren't good enough to win the game but it shows our grit and resilience".
