Jury Acquits Minnesota Police Officer Who Fatally Shot Philando Castile”

The Minnesota state police said officers began arresting the protesters past midnight, after issuing three warnings for them to get off of a major highway in the city.

According to federal reports, only 4 percent of civil rights complaints against police officers have been prosecuted since 1995.

The arrests came hours after St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez was found not guilty on Friday of second-degree manslaughter in 32-year-old Castile's July 2016 shooting death in the St. Paul suburb of Falcon Heights. It was widely reported at the time of #Philando Castile's death that he informed the officer that he was, in fact, licensed to carry a gun and had one in the glove compartment. "He let the officer know that he had a firearm and that he was reaching for his wallet, and the officer just shot him in his arm". The Washington Post reported that the jury decision came nearly a year after Castile's death. Americans were stunned to see the video, live-streamed on Facebook, of his panicked girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, as blood spread on Castile's shirt.

But Ramsey County Attorney John Choi, who filed charges against the officer, declared such fear unreasonable.

Castile's death was part of a series of high-profile shootings of African-Americans by police.

"The City of St. Anthony has concluded that the public will be best served if Officer Yanez is no longer a police officer in our city", the city said in a statement. More than 2,000 people marched through the streets and gathered at the state capitol.

A protest on a Minnesota freeway over the acquittal of a police officer in the slaying of black motorist Philando Castile resulted in the arrest of 18 demonstrators early on Saturday, state police said.

"Some people will tell you protest don't work ..." In an incident that shocked the nation, Mr. Castile's girlfriend live-streamed the moments following the shooting on Facebook while sitting in the auto along with their four-year old daughter.

In the USA, legal cases are usually decided by a panel of 12 people sworn to give a verdict based on evidence submitted to a court.

January 9: Leary denies a request from the American Civil Liberties Union to release squad vehicle video of Castile's shooting. "T$3 his system gave us a jury that was 83% white and 58% male, and included people who said they could never convict a cop". Yanez shot Castile five times.

Yanez told Castile, "OK, don't reach for it then" and "Don't pull it out".

February 11: Castile's mother, Valerie Castile, unveils a temporary memorial at the site of her son's shooting. "This is my license, ' they automatically are reaching for their gun thinking you're going to draw your gun on them, once again not realizing you're a good guy", said Martin, who lives in Glenside, Pennsylvania.
