Man behind UK mosque attack not known to security services-minister”

Police man a cordon at Finsbury Park where a vehicle struck pedestrians in London Monday, June 19, 2017.

A 47-year-old man has been arrested for attempted murder and remains in custody at a south London police station.

People at the scene shouted at him: "Why did you do that?"

- Witnesses saw a man underneath the van. Two others were treated for minor injuries.

- Van appears to be a hire vehicle from a company in Wales.

The incident bore the hallmarks of a terrorist attack in the British capital earlier this month.

The latest incident took place just over two weeks after three Islamist militants drove into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbed people at nearby restaurants and bars, killing eight. Eight of the injured were taken to hospitals and the rest were treated at the scene.

Toufik Kacimi, chief executive of the Muslim Welfare House, also praised the actions of Imam Mohammed, calling him a "hero".

"The driver jumped out and then he was pinned down to the floor and people were punching him and beating him, which was reasonable because of what he's done", he said.

Witness Hamza Nimane, told BBC Radio 4's Today program that worshippers from the mosque had managed to capture the attacker before police arrived.

Jeremy Corbyn, who lives near the site of the attack, expressed "absolute shock".

Mr Javid said: "The perpetrator of this attack - and those bad attacks that we saw recently in Manchester and London - their intention is to seek to divide society. We will not let this happen".

The attack will stretch the capacity of authorities in Britain, who have faced four attacks in recent months, together with a major fire that has killed dozens. Basu said it was a "challenging" time for London and that the emergency services were stretched.

"There was this white van stopped outside Finsbury Park Mosque that seems to have hit people who were coming out of the mosque after prayers finished".

Eyewitnesses told British media that the van seemed to have veered and hit people intentionally. "He was fighting to run away".

"Some big van ... crushing the people in the mosque. I want to kill Muslims, '" Rahman said.

"He had been restrained by about three people". Police say they are investigating these reports but believe that only one person carried out the attack. "My friend said he said some words, but I didn't hear it", he said.

Video filmed in the immediate aftermath showed a Caucasian man being detained by police. May said earlier she would chair an emergency security Cabinet session later Monday and that her thoughts were with the injured, their loved ones and emergency officials who responded to the incident.

"We will stop at nothing to defeat it", she added.

"Those who try to divide us and who aim to spread hate, fear and division will not succeed", Kozbar said following a minute's silence near the scene of the attack.

"I have assured the leadership of the mosque and the Muslim welfare centre of our prayers and support", he said.

The Finsbury Park Mosque in North London is no stranger to controversy.

To the north, Manchester was hit by a deadly attack May 22 when a suicide bomber killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert.

"There has been far too much tolerance of extremism... including Islamophobia", she said, announcing the creation of a new commission to fight extremism in the same way as racism. The result, in the years since, is considered a great London success story of active cultural integration and community spirit. He called the incident a "horrific terrorist attack". "We've had petrol bombs thrown at Mosques", Versi said.
