Man plows van into crowd by London mosque; 10 injured

Man plows van into crowd by London mosque; 10 injured”

Sky News reported that the mosque's imam prevented the crowd from beating the attacker until police arrived.

"Add to that anti-Muslim sentiment and you may have what lies behind the attack on a group of people leaving the mosque after evening prayers in London on Sunday". He also complained that the "mainstream media" was unwilling to call the attack a terrorist incident.

Others were frustrated that Finsbury Park was still stigmatized by the extremist history of its main mosque, which was once the haunt of radical Islamic cleric Abu Hamza but is under new ownership. We thought he was late for work or trying to catch the traffic light before it turned red. Then he reversed, and carried on. We're not safe. If I stay here, people could come and attack me with a vehicle.

Omar said it had been "an attack on Muslims practicing religion" - and one which occurred during the holy month of Ramadan.

Shocking footage shows the suspect begging the crowds of baying bystanders to "kill me" as armed cops swooped.

'I go to the mosques and walk the streets of Manchester, I'm sure people know that'.

He called for additional security at mosques across the UK.

A man told Britain's Press Association that the van had swerved suddenly and that he had narrowly avoided being hit.

"I want people to feel as safe as possible", he said.

Another eyewitness, who gave his name as Athman, told AFP: "People were screaming: "It's a terrorist attack, it's an attack, this guy attacked us", and I had to run back and tried to save people who were still alive and giving water, helping the police".

Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said police are investigating whether the death of the man who was being given first aid was a direct result of the attack, but it was too early to say for sure.

Someone in the crowd is heard shouting, "No one touch him!"

"There were a group of brothers who were calm and collected and managed to calm people down and to extinguish any flames of anger or mob rule that would have taken charge had this group of mature brothers not stepped in", he said.

An imam reportedly saved the van driver involved in the suspected Finsbury Park terrorist attack from being attacked by members of the public in the immediate aftermath of the crash, reported The Independent.

Describing Imam Mohamed Mahmoud as a "hero", Qasimi said: "People started hitting him hard and Mohamed took so many punches because he was protecting the guy until the police arrived". This is a clear hate crime. "We've got to listen to local leaders about what more it is that we can do".

British security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with official policy, said hate crimes directed at Muslims have increased almost five-fold in the wake of several attacks in Britain.

Nor was this was the first act of terrorism against Muslim communities.

Mohammed Kozbar, chairman of the Finsbury Park mosque, described it as a "cowardly attack which is no different from the attacks in Manchester or London", referring to the suicide bombing in Manchester in northwest England on May 22, which left 22 people dead. "It is diverse, multicultural and people live together without any issues".

The Archbishop of Canterbury posted on Facebook: "The freedom to worship without fear is a right we cherish as a nation and was won at great human cost over many years".

"The rampant Islamophobia that we see time and again has to be called out for what it is".
