Scalise Shooting Will Win Us Tuesday's House Election — Georgia GOP Leader

If Ossoff brings the district back under the Democratic umbrella, the national takeaway likely will be that the election is a sign that voters are dissatisfied with Republican lawmakers and by proxy Trump's presidency, giving confidence to Democrats that more Congressional seats can be flipped.

Pundits say the election will be a test of young voter turnout.

"A victory for Jon means we're going to take the House". The election in the state's 6th Congressional District is set for Tuesday. "If he falls short it signals that we have more work to do". Trump barely won this well-educated, affluent district in November, despite previous Republican nominees here eclipsing 60 percent.

Cutting past the political circus that dominates Washington, D.C., Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff said on Saturday that the highly anticipated special election contest in GA-06 should be about "improving daily life for Georgians".

In the face of Democrats' efforts to make the race about Trump, Handel said that she had neither distanced herself nor tied herself to the president.

But Perdue flatly disputed them as Handel looked on Saturday.

"Either side gains from a win but they lose more by a loss", former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who once represented the district, told The News. "They think he can fool you". This is the south, it's a suburban seat, it's upper middle class.

But it very well may, with polls showing a tossup in the 6th Congressional District, where Republicans usually coast. Democrats already outperformed their historic numbers in open seats in conservative districts in Montana and Kansas this year, and in last week's Virginia primaries Democratic voters turned out in much higher numbers than their GOP counterparts, breaking with recent trends in the state.

Voters will decide Georgia's special election between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel, a race seen as an early bellwether in how the makeup of Congress could change during next year's midterms.

No House race has ever been this costly, with more than $50 million being spent between candidates, parties and political groups. Ossoff doubled the $8 million he raised in the first round, hauling in $15 million for the runoff. That's in line with most of the polls released in the closing weeks of the race. He was a senior national security staffer to Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) before heading a company that produces investigative films on political corruption, crime and worldwide issues, including work for the Al Jazeera network - a fact his opponents have seized on. As Joy Reid pointed out, most people in Ossoff's district chose health care as their top issue. He also pointed out that premiums under Affordable Care Act would only increase.

Both candidates were surrounded by documentary crews, national and local media as they met with voters Sunday. She's seized on Ossoff's massive national fundraising haul to cast her rival as a Nancy Pelosi acolyte who doesn't live in the district.

He said he wanted to focus his appeal on "turned-off voters" he anxious would stay home on Tuesday. "The only people who want to make this about other things are, frankly, reporters like you and others out there", she told Breitbart News. Results will be parsed as a barometer for both parties nationally as they realign in the Trump era. "It seems to be completely nationalized".
