SNP can stop Tory majority as polls narrow says Sturgeon

SNP can stop Tory majority as polls narrow says Sturgeon”

Nicola Sturgeon in the Drawing Room in Bute House, Edinburgh.

Former Labour Chancellor Alistair Darling has been campaigning in East Renfrewshire.

"Also Jeremy Corbyn accepts there is nothing progressive about trying to break up the United Kingdom".

The First Minister will campaign in Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintoilloch East, Argyll and Bute, North Ayrshire, Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock, Dumfries and Galloway and Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale.

Meanwhile, the poll found support for independence at 43%, with 57% backing a No vote if another referendum were to take place.

When the results are put into the ScotlandVotes seat predictor by Weber Shandwick, they indicate the SNP could lose as many as 10 constituencies, falling from the 56 it won in 2015 to 46.

Ms Sturgeon described the election, which Mrs May called in a bid to increase the Tory majority at Westminster, as an "opportunity to make positive statement about the kind of country we want Scotland to be".

She said: "The SNP is the only party who are serious about being that strong voice for Scotland - contesting every seat across the country while our opponents run lacklustre campaigns in just a smattering of seats".

"Any Tory MPs elected in Scotland will simply rubberstamp whatever the Tory government does to young people, and Labour can't win this election in Scotland - meaning that voting Labour risks letting Tory MPs in by the back door".

"Instead of working to hold a Tory government in check, you have Scottish Labour appearing to be in talks with the Tories or appearing to be in informal arrangements with the Tories to boost a Tory majority".

Narrowing polls have raised the possibility of a hung parliament, as Jeremy Corbyn's popularity ratings soar.

He said "the tide is turning" and "the shine is coming off the nationalists" due to their "poor" record on health and education.

"People in Scotland remember them as the cheerleaders for the Tory-led Better Together campaign".

Tory deputy leader Jackson Carlaw said: "Once again this poll shows that the Scottish Conservatives are best-placed to take the fight to the SNP at this election".

She described Theresa May as "the queen of u-turns" and said "a strong block of SNP MPs will demand that she u-turn on her austerity agenda and start investing in our public services, our businesses and our people".

She added: "We are about to go out to tender for an additional different route into teaching".

"In seats across the country it is the Liberal Democrats that are set to sweep the SNP out and in these key areas people should back the Liberal Democrats to change the direction of this country and send a message to the SNP that they can not keep sweeping our problems under the carpet".

"Do they want an MP who will do nothing more than advance the cause for another divisive independence referendum, or do they want an MP that will stand up for the local community?"
