Trump attorney: President is not under investigation”

The Washington Post reported that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating Trump for obstruction of justice because he fired FBI Director James Comey at a time when Comey was investigating alleged Russia-Trump connections.

Comey testified to Congress that one of his "leadership team" at the FBI did not want him even to assure the president in private that he was not a subject of the Russian Federation investigation because the inquiry into the Trump campaign's dealings with Russian Federation might eventually focus on Trump himself.

"That tweet was in response to a Washington Post story that ran with five unnamed sources", Sekulow said in an interview that aired Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union".

Senator Marco Rubio of Florida said, "The FBI is going to do its job".

Prosecutors sometimes, but not always, notify individuals through their attorneys that they are targets of an investigation and are at risk of being charged.

"Let me be crystal clear so you completely understand, we have not received, nor are we aware of any investigation of the president of the United States".

Trump at first attributed Comey's firing to a recommendation by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for his handling of an investigation past year into the use of a private email server by Trump's defeated challenger, Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump's legal team said, "The president has not been and is not under investigation and the tweet was in response to the Washington Post story with no named sources whatsoever". Tweets like these, however, indicate that Trump is massively frustrated and wants to get rid of Rosenstein, Mueller, and the Russian Federation investigation altogether. Basically, it seems like the entire reasoning behind saying Trump isn't under investigation is that Trump hasn't been told by anybody that he is.

A U.S. official who is familiar with the rough outlines of the probe and who spoke on condition of anonymity told Reuters on Thursday that Mueller was also examining whether Trump or others tried to interfere with the investigation.

At the same time, the lawyer blamed the firing of FBI Director James Comey on several events, including the recommendations from Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Kushner has been represented on business matters and other issues by Jamie Gorelick.

In context, Sekulow seemed to argue that Comey, in his capacity as the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, should've considered his conversations with the president to be privileged - which is to say, confidential information, not to be shared, between a lawyer and that lawyer's client.

Prior to being tapped to lead the investigation, Mueller and Gorelick were partners at the Washington, D.C. law firm WilmerHale.

Mueller's investigators have asked for information and will talk to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Sekulow said Trump took action based on their recommendation, and as a result, he is being investigated.

A lawyer for Mr Trump legal team later asserted the President is not under investigation, despite the the tweet.

Rosenstein finds himself in a spot as he could face the President anger or answer questions about his own future role supervising Mueller when he could become a witness in the special counsel's probe.

"Trump has a compulsion to counter attack and is very pugnacious", Gingrich said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday. "And as far as that goes, I'd say we're 20% into it". "The best thing that could happen for the president, and the country, is a full and credible investigation".

This week we could finally learn if there are recordings of the President's private conversations with Comey at the White House.

The lawyer also suggested Twitter s character limit may be partly to blame.

Rep. Adam Schiff says he wants the White House to acknowledge the tapes or make clear there are no tapes and "it was an idle threat". The committee also sent a letter to Comey asking for any notes or memos.
