UK PM May says attack on Muslims near mosque is

48-year-old has been arrested for driving a van into a group of mosque-goers near Finsbury Park Station in North London.

An imam has praised after he saved the FIndsbury Park attack suspect from being beaten when crowds pulled him from the van he used to kill one and injure many more.

The attack occurred about 12:20 a.m. when a speeding van swerved into worshippers who were giving first aid to a man outside the mosque.

"Three of them were bleeding badly", he said.

"From what we are seeing and from what witnesses have reported to us there was nobody else in the van and it appears at this time that this attacker attacked alone", Basu said.

Eyewitnesses interviewed by ABC News said people were gathered outside the mosque after prayers tending to an old man who was having a heart attack when the van drove into them.

Reports said an imam protected the suspect from an angry crowd until police arrived to arrest him. The London Ambulance Service says the injured are being taken to hospitals. The man later died, though it is not yet clear if his death was linked to the attack, Basu said.

Britain's terror alert level is at "severe", meaning security officials believe an attack is highly likely, and a series of extremist attacks have struck across the country in the last few months. Eight injured people were taken to hospitals, and a suspect was arrested. "An attack on one community is an attack on all of us", Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said.

Police have also denied rumors that a knife was involved.

She was due to hold an emergency ministerial meeting on Monday.

Police in London said anti-Muslim incidents have spiked in the wake of the June 4 London Bridge attack. "I urge all Muslims and people with other faith or no faith to stand together, remain united and don't let terrorists to divide us".

The area was busy with worshippers leaving evening prayers at the time of the incident.

Police say one person died when a van hit crowd of worshippers in north London and the Counter Terrorism Command is investigating the crash.

The council tweeted that its prayers were with the victims. "So, it's the holy month of Ramadan".

Warfa said numerous people in the street were worshipers who'd been attending late-night taraweeh prayers at Finsbury Park Mosque. Two more people were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Further details were not immediately available.

West Mercia Police is carrying out additional engagement work with the Muslim community and has reassured the public that they have plans in place to provide a visible police presence around mosques.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in statement that it strongly condemned "the trampling of Muslim worshipers" in northern London on Monday morning.

Another eyewitness, Mohamad, said he and others in the community are anxious about returning to the area for prayer on Tuesday. He said police had instructed him not to speak to the media.
