UK police: London mosque attack suspect now arrested on terror grounds

(Victoria Jones/PA via AP). One person has been arrested.

Residents near the Finsbury Park Mosque early Monday after a van swerved into people leaving the mosque shortly after midnight, killing one person.

Police believe the attacker acted alone but said they were investigating all circumstances leading up to the incident. "I didn't see the attacker himself, although he seems to have been arrested, but I did see the van". In March, a man drove a auto into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge and stabbed a police officer to death before being shot dead.

Muslims pray on a sidewalk in the Finsbury Park area of north London after a vehichle hit pedestrians, on June 19, 2017. A vehicle struck pedestrians near a mosque in north London early Monday morn.

"It is a reminder that terrorism, extremism and hatred take many forms; and our determination to tackle them must be the same whoever is responsible".

Some bystanders told reporters that the van's driver said "Kill all Muslims" and "I did it" following the attack, and he reportedly smiled and waved at the crowds as he was taken away in a police cruiser.

Witnesses described hearing the man, who was detained by members of the public at the scene, shout: "I'm going to kill Muslims". Police have not released his identity.

Someone in the crowd yelled to others not to harm the man while he was taken into custody.

"Given the methodology, given what's occurring, the tragic incidents across the country, this had all the hallmarks of a terrorist incident", Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said. Muslim leaders called for calm.

"People feel unsafe because after the terrorist attacks of London, Manchester, the increase of Islamophobia and hate crimes", he added.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, the first Muslim to serve in that position, said extra police would be deployed.

Transportation officials said roads in the area were being closed.

The Ministry added that the Government condemned the attack on innocent civilians at the Finsbury Park mosque. "All the victims were from the Muslim community", Efe news quoted Basu as saying. "Luckily I managed to escape, and then the guy came out of his van". "This person was conscious. They pull together, they work closely with each other and the actions of Imam Mohammed are what I would expect from a good faith leader and a good Muslim leader". Counter-terror police were probing the incident.

"The van was driving towards us to try and basically hit us at speed and everyone was shocked and people were screaming", Rana said. "People are both scared and angry".
