Australia suspends air strikes in Syria - government”

A new round of Astana talks had been scheduled for June but was indefinitely postponed as key players wrangled over the future of fragile safe zones agreed for Syria in May.

Following the downing of a Syrian jet by an American plane, Russian Federation has said it will treat US warplanes flying in parts of Syria where its own air force is operating as targets, The Independent reported on Monday.

The Syrian army acknowledged that one of its planes had been shot down.

Washington says the Syrian plane was bombing US -backed rebels.

- How serious is this?

It's the first time the U.S. has shot down a Syrian aircraft since it began fighting ISIS in the country in 2014.

Analysts say neither Washington nor President Bashar al-Assad's regime appear to be seeking further confrontation, although the risks remain high in Syria's increasingly crowded battle fields and airspace.Russia's foreign ministry accused Washington of failing to use the hotline before downing the plane near Raqa, and called for a "careful investigation by the USA command" into the incident.

Tensions between regime forces and the coalition in At Tanf are high after several incidents in recent weeks.

A Government spokesman added: "Air operations continue and deconfliction measures are ongoing". This followed a strike on pro-regime forces on May 18 on the same grounds, according to the coalition. Sunday's incident came one month after a US airstrike hit a pro-Assad militia that threatened USA -backed forces in southern Syria.

The Pentagon has repeatedly stressed it has no interest in increasing its role in Syria's civil war, and that its sole focus is on defeating IS.

"We consider the actions of the USA command as a deliberate default on their obligations under the memorandum on on preventing incidents and providing for safe flights during operations in Syria signed on October 20, 2015", the Defense Ministry stressed.

Other Iranian officials were more blunt in their assessment of the attack.

Markey said Sunday's incident further underlined the need for President Donald Trump to engage in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Syria. It is the allies in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group in the war-torn country.

Charles Lister, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, sees the unfolding situation in Syria as an inevitable effect of America's stubborn insistence that it is only in the country to fight IS, without addressing the broader civil war. And will the fight against ISIS lead the USA into a war against Assad?

Even after Russian Federation went all-in on the side of the Syrian President to devastating effect - most dramatically in the city of Aleppo - the USA sought to stay out of a country-to-country confrontation with either the Syrian regime or its generous backers in Russian Federation and Iran.

"I'm sure that because of this, neither the USA nor anyone else will take any actions to threaten our aircraft", he told the state-owned RIA Novosti news agency.
