Chad recalls ambassador from Qatar amid Gulf Arab row

Donald Trump leveled fresh accusations at besieged Qatar during Friday's brief press conference.

He said Bahrain had allegedly asked the daughter of a woman divorced from her Qatari husband for 20 years to leave Manama because she holds Qatari citizenship.

Making his official reaction for the first time since the crisis in Gulf began, External affairs ministry here in New Delhi said India is closely following the emerging situation in the region in the wake of the recent decision by Saudi Arabia and some other countries to break diplomatic relations with the State of Qatar.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Bahrain represent the most prominent of the Gulf Arab states and premier powers in the Sunni world, which rivals Iran and its Shia influence in the Middle East.

Tillerson called for "no further escalation by the parties in the region". Both Britain and the United States were helping with their inquiry, they said. "We have to stop the funding of terrorism", said Trump.

He added that there was an "understanding" that Qatar would "take measures in relation to supporting some organizations and ... some individuals", but that Qatar didn't live up to its commitments.

Earlier on Friday, Tillerson asked Saudi Arabia and its allies to halt the blockade because of "humanitarian consequences" and also because it was "hindering U.S. military actions in the region and the campaign against Isis".

Trump had previously appeared to side with the Saudis and other nations against Qatar in a series of tweets on Tuesday.

"The blockade is hindering USA military action in the region, and the campaign against ISIS", Tillerson said, using an acronym for the extremist group.

Still, the Pentagon has been developing contingency plans in case there's any interruption, defense officials said.

"It was started based on fabricated news, being wedged and being inserted in our national news agency, which was hacked and proved by the Federal Bureau of Investigation", he added.

He also ratified a bill approved by Turkish lawmakers on Wednesday to deploy troops to a Turkish base in Qatar in a move seen as Ankara s show of support for Doha. The Qatari Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"Sorry, but we will continue to give all kinds of support to Qatar", he said.

"Qatar has a history of supporting groups that have spanned the spectrum of political expression, from activism to violence", he added.

On Thursday, Qatar's Sheikh Mohammed said his country had been isolated "because we are successful and progressive" and called his country "a platform for peace not terrorism".

The blacklist is the latest in a string of allegations made by Saudi Arabia and its allies against Qatar since the crisis erupted late last month.

Egypt and Bahrain issued a statement on Friday listing 59 people and 12 entities that the countries accuse of being Qatar-based and/or funded by Qatar and are connected to terrorism.
