Coroner: Cocaine among drugs found in Carrie Fisher's system

The primary cause of death was determined to be sleep apnea, with the drugs found in her system to be a contributing factor.

But investigators could not determine what impact the cocaine and other drugs had on her death.

Sleep apnoea is a common condition in which a person stops breathing during sleep, either for a few seconds or minutes.

Fisher's death came four days after she suffered a cardiac event on a flight from London to Los Angeles.

Carrie Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, released a statement after a toxicology report revealed that Fisher had cocaine and heroin in her system at the time of her death.

The actresses were laid to rest together at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills, a cemetery where numerous celebrities are buried.

Fisher's brother, Todd Fisher, responded to the official cause of death on Friday. He added that his family did not want a coroner's investigation of his sister's death.

"We're not enlightened", he said after the initial findings were released.

"I would tell you, from my perspective that there's certainly no news that Carrie did drugs", Todd Fisher said. Numerous drugs were prescribed by doctors to try and treat her mental health conditions, he said.

"My mom battled drug addiction and mental illness her entire life", a statement to People magazine reads.

The actress had publicly addressed her longtime struggle with drug abuse, including smoking marijuana at 13 and using LSD at 21. She was also outspoken about her mental health issues and the drastic solution she found: electric shock therapy. Said Fisher of Reynolds: "She's been more than a mother to me, not much, but definitely more".

"They're working on her right now", the pilot said in a public recording of the conversation on liveatc.net.

In the years before her passing, Fisher spent a good chunk of her time spreading awareness about mental illness and addiction. "Can you really blame them?" Toward the end of the flight, Fisher could not be stirred awake, the report states.

Fisher, best known as the iconic double-bun hairdo-wearing Princess Leia in the "Star Wars" franchise, died on December 27, 2016 at the age of 60.
