Five people reported missing in Grenfell Tower fire found safe and well

Police Commander Stuart Cundy gave the new figure during a statement outside Scotland Yard, saying it includes both people who were confirmed dead and others who are missing and presumed dead.

Theresa May is "distraught" by the Grenfell Tower block fire, her most senior minister has said ahead of a meeting with survivors of the disaster at Downing Street.

Reports suggest that a renovation project on Grenfell Tower past year intentionally did not include safety devices such as sprinklers and doors created to keep the fire from spreading.

New York City Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro, whose department is among the most practiced in the world at fighting fires in tall buildings, says he believes in the stay-put policy but "what happened in London, in which a fire went from the fourth floor to the 21st floor in what we understand was in 17 minutes, is unprecedented".

He said it had been "incredibly emotional working in there". Nazir Afzal, the former chief crown prosecutor for the north-west and former acting chief crown prosecutor for London, said: "I would expect criminal charges to follow".

"The response of the emergency services, NHS [National Health Service] and the community has been heroic", May said in a statement released Saturday after the prime minister met with victims and community leaders.

At least 58 people are missing and presumed dead in the blaze that broke out in the early hours, catching many families in their sleep.

"Our focus has been on those that we know were in Grenfell Tower". The public is also demanding answers about how the blaze spread so quickly amid reports that the recently-renovated building's exterior paneling fueled the flames.

The leader of Kensington Council today refused to say whether he will resign over his handling of the Grenfell inferno after Theresa May apologised for failures on the ground.

"When the truth comes out about this tragedy, we may find that there is blood on the hands of a number of organizations", Lammy said.

Officials are using dental records, fingerprints and DNA samples to try and positively identify victims.

"When an existing building is undergoing a renovation, upgraded fire safety measures may be required depending on the type of insulation and cladding proposed as part of the renovation", he said. British officials have ordered a review of other buildings that have had similar renovations.

The tragedy has provoked a huge response from nearby communities. More than 3 million pounds ($3.8 million) has been raised for the victims, and the British government has announced a 5 million-pound ($6.3 million) emergency fund.

Anger flared in the Kensington community over the weekend - with many protests taking place across the capital - as some accused the authorities of withholding information and responding inadequately.

The protesters chanted "we want justice", "bring them out" and "shame on you". There is ample food and water, but very little privacy or proper bedding.

Some residents had warned months ago that the tower represented a unsafe fire risk. They say their complaints were ignored - and fear it was because the tower was full of poor people in a predominantly wealthy borough.
