Officers also believe the gang wore fake suicide belts, which were water bottles covered in silver duct tape, to deter marksmen from shooting them. One of the first police officers on the scene of the London Bridge attack says he was met by pandemonium, as people fled in panic and the wounded lay on sidewalks.

The fake explosive belts were visible during the attacks, Haydon said, and may have looked real to those who saw them.

Police Commander Dean Haydon speculated that the bloodthirsty zealots might have worn bomb props "as protection from being shot themselves".

He hired the van and drove it, carrying out the attack along with Rachid Redouane, 30, and Youssef Zaghba, 22.

Twelve people arrested in the initial stages were released without charge.

They used that van to run over people on London Bridge before leaving the crashed vehicle and stabbing people in Borough Market, police have said.

The spate of recent attacks - the deadliest in Britain since four British Islamist suicide bombers killed 52 people on the London transport system in July 2005 - thrust security and policing to the fore of the campaign for last Thursday's election.

Police in London Saturday released a photograph of the knife used by killer Khuram Shazad Butt in the London Bridge terror attack.

Police say they have interviewed 262 witnesses, from 19 countries.

One of those arrested is a man who allegedly worked out at the same gym as 27-year-old Khurum Butt, thought to be the attack ringleader.

Witnesses described seeing the 39-year-old Echeverria using a skateboard against attackers before he fell to the ground during last Saturday's attacks on and near London Bridge.

Police released additional details from its investigation; most notably, Butt tried online to rent a larger, 7.5-ton truck that could have killed more people, but his payment was declined.

Three 12-inch pink ceramic kitchen knives were found with tape around the handles and leather straps attached to them to keep the weapons on the attackers' wrists.

Soon after, police opened the van and discovered thirteen Molotov cocktails - firebombs made from wine bottles, filled with lighter fuel, perhaps intended for another wave of attacks.

"I couldn't just attack".
