Liverpool apologise for Virgil van Djik approach, end interest”

After FSG released a statement yesterday evening apologising to Southampton for illegally approaching Virgil Van Dijk, Moore will meet with their officials to discuss what's happened during the saga.

Nonetheless Southampton are under the impression that Liverpool are making a deliberate attempt to unsettle van Dijk, with reports last month suggesting that the Dutch global would be interested in moving to Merseyside if they reached the Champions League.

According to the Daily Echo, Southampton aren't happy with the way the Reds are trying to recruit van Dijk and they want the Premier League to probe the club over the alleged illegal approach.

The 60-word statement included an apology to Southampton for a "misunderstanding" about Van Dijk and the incessant media speculation.

As a result, Liverpool's chase for the Netherlands global dramatically collapsed on Wednesday night, with the Merseyside giants releasing a statement and apologising for creating media speculation around the player.

Whilst things look bleak on the south coast, Saints are going down swinging and are now asking the Premier League to investigate Liverpool's pursuit of Van Dijk.

Considering Liverpool have raided the Saints every summer for their best players ranging from Adam Lallana to Dejan Lovren to Nathaniel Clyne, the club were understandably wary of losing yet another player to the Merseyside club.

The £50m-rated defender signed a new six-year contract last year, having joined Southampton from Celtic for £13m in September 2015.

Sky also reported that Van Dijk has been swayed by Klopp's involvement in the potential deal.

So - although the two clubs did business again over Mane last summer - there is likely to be no easy route for Liverpool should they make a bid for the Dutch centre-back.

New chief executive Peter Moore will also meet his counterparts at a meeting of the Premier League on Thursday, where the issue will no doubt be raised.
