London mosque attack suspect arrested for terrorism

Citing witnesses, the Guardian reports that after deliberately targeting pedestrians, the driver "got out of the van and shouted "I want to kill Muslims" before onlookers pinned him to the ground".

One man was heard shouting: "How come you were so quick today?"

ENAR director said that the European Union and its member states had to challenge hatred and the discourses fueling Islamophobia across the continent.

Police in the United Kingdom are investigating possible links to terrorism after a van was driven into a crowd of people outside Finsbury Park Mosque in London in the early hours of Monday morning.

The attack took place while mosque-goers were observing Ramadan. Britain's terrorist alert has been set at "severe" meaning an attack is highly likely.

Police said another man died at the scene, although he was receiving first aid at the time and it wasn't clear if he died as a result of the attack or of something else.

Police arrested the man soon after. The attacker was also killed by police.

The involved mosque released a statement saying that the community has been working for decades to create an atmosphere of peace and tolerance in Finsbury Park.

Prime Minister Theresa May called the incident, which mirrored other high-profile terror attacks in which vehicles were used as weapons, "every bit as sickening as those that have come before".

Muslim Council of Britain secretary general Harun Khan condemned the attack and also urged calm.

Police have said the crash caused several casualties and that one person has been arrested.

Commander Cressida Dick, speaking in the London neighborhood of Finsbury Park, says people in Muslim communities will see more of their police protecting them in the coming days. "Our prayers are with the victims".

People had been attending mosques in the area as part of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Emergency services stand guard on Fonthill road near Finsbury Park station after a vehicle struck pedestrians in north London, Monday June 19, 2017. One person has been arrested.

"I have assured the leadership of the mosque and the Muslim welfare centre of our prayers and support", he said. "By God's grace we managed to surround him and to protect him from any harm", Mahmoud told reporters.

The incident is being investigated as an act of terror, according to London police.

No other details were immediately available.
