Man Arrested for London Van Attack on Mosque”

A 48-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

British media named the suspect as Darren Osborne, 47-year-old father of four who was living in Cardiff, Wales.

Khan says all these incidents are attacks on the city's shared values.

Eight people were taken to hospital after the attack outside the mosque, which is also a community centre.

Theresa May called the attack "every bit as sickening as those that have come before".

May said she would chair an emergency security Cabinet session Monday.

Mrs May told reporters after the meeting: "The awful terrorist attack which took place last night was an evil born out of hatred and it has devastated a community". It seeks to drive us apart - and to break the precious bonds of solidarity and citizenship that we share in this country.

The White House on Monday also commented on the incident, which took place after evening Ramadan prayers had ended.

In the hours immediately following the attack, the Metropolitan Police in public statements described it as a "vehicle in collision with pedestrians".

"When I got him on the ground, I said, 'Why are you doing this?' He said, 'I want to kill more Muslims'".

He said the driver had run out of the van but a group of people caught him and held him until police arrived.

"The reason why we are here today is to make sure people say it is a terror attack and not an incident, because the truth has to be told".

One man died and 10 people were injured in the assault, the latest in a series of terror attacks to hit the United Kingdom this year.

London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, called the act "deliberate" and urged Londoners to "remain calm and vigilant".

The incident occurred near two mosques: the Finsbury Park Mosque and the Muslim Welfare House.

Police are treating the incident as a terror attack. All the victims were Muslim.

Our UK correspondent adds: Witnesses said the man who died had been taken ill outside the Muslim Welfare House, a few hundred metres away from Finsbury Park Mosque. Police said he was already receiving first aid when the attack unfolded. Two of them are seriously injured.

"There was this white van stopped outside Finsbury Park mosque that seemed to have hit people who were coming out after prayers had finished". Around 10% of the borough's population is Muslim.

"He picked this area well and he knows Finsbury Park is predominantly a Muslim area". However, the mosque was shut down and reorganized and has not been associated with radical views for more than a decade.

- Since then, the mosque has worked to turn its reputation around and now operates mostly as a community center.

"There is now an ongoing investigation by our Counter Terrorism Command to establish why this attack was carried out".

"The good news is [that] after the Westminster Bridge terrorist attack we didn't see a big spike in hate crime [or] Islamophobic crime".

The London mayor praised the imam's actions.

"These people that are doing this, they're trying to divide us as a community and we won't let that happen".

But Rabbi Herschel Gluck, chairman of the Muslim-Jewish Forum, who was one of the local faith leaders who attended the meeting believed she had listened to recent criticism and was receptive to the concerns of the community.

"During the night, ordinary British citizens were set upon while they were going about their lives, completing their night worship".
